Questions and experiences using Fedora Mobile (as a PinePhone newbie)
Posted by: zkajdan - 09-30-2021, 07:43 AM - Forum: PinePhone Software - Replies (1)

Hi,

would this be a good place for questions / experience reports related to using Fedora on the PinePhone?
If not, where would I best post them? On GitHub, maybe, in this repo: https://github.com/nikhiljha/pp-fedora-sdsetup?
Just in case this is a good place, let me just list them here :-)

For context, I just got my first PinePhone, and am using Megi's multi-distro image for experimentation.
I've run dnf update, which if I understand correctly does not update the kernel. But everything else should be up-to-date.

1) Using the Settings application, I have to often switch manually between landscape and portrait orientations in order to be able to close sub-windows. I do this by leaving Settings and clicking on the portrait/landscape icon. Is there a way around this?

2) Just be be sure - the display is not supposed to be switching between orientations itself when I rotate the phone, right?

3) Again just to be sure - there is just one possible screen resolution; that's to be expected too, I guess?

4) BTW, "portrait" and "landscape" are the other way round, for me ...

5) Using Calls, the sound level is extremely low (practically unhearable). This is despite system-wide, sound is set to maximum.

6) I was expecting I had to enter the PIN on startup, but I've found it's instead configured in the "Mobile Broadband" settings. Isn't this a security problem (assuming someone could log into my phone)?

7) After a phone reboot, I always have to actively turn on Mobile Broadband - is this expected?

8) Is there a roadmap for the project?

In addition to these questions, I'd be very interested of to hear what experiences others are having with Fedora Mobile, and whether people are using it "in production" or mainly for development/experiments.

Many thanks in advance!!

How to remove "Show Only Adaptive Apps" option in arch-phosh
Posted by: pineuser0 - 09-30-2021, 05:08 AM - Forum: Arch Linux on PinePhone - Replies (2)

I have multiple apps functioning as satisfactorily or more so than all of the default apps on my arch-phosh pinephone. These apps that the system seems to think it's not compatible with only appear when the widget in the top-right corner is checked, plus it defaults to only showing the 'adaptive apps' when restarted.

I would like to at least set it's default to not hiding most what I use the phone for, but my main goal is to completely remove the widget to possibly replace it with something of use.

  Customized Notifications - Non-native Apps
Posted by: arno_nuehm - 09-30-2021, 02:03 AM - Forum: Mobian on PinePhone - Replies (2)

Hello there,

does anybody know, if there is currently a way to get customized notifications for non-native apps? The list in "Settings-Notifications" is not complete and I'd like to add one or two apps - like Cawbird or Axolotl.

Thanks in advance!

Shocked Pine phone caught on fire after inserting SDcard
Posted by: majikbear - 09-29-2021, 07:56 PM - Forum: PinePhone Hardware - Replies (6)

I have not used my Pinephone much since there haven't been really any useable daily driver OS available.

Today I decided to use an SDcard to try out some Linux distro images.

Unfortunately after I inserted an SDcard and powered on the device, first the area around the SDcard slot got very hot and began to melt, then the device burst into flames on my desk.

Has this happened to anyone else?

  Reddit clients for the Pinephone.
Posted by: Gamey - 09-29-2021, 03:56 PM - Forum: PinePhone Software - No Replies

Note! These are initial notes for my future blog post and I was simply to lazy to transform them from markdown but still want the help of the community. Please don't kill me and f you know any more Reddit clients for Linux systems please let me know and I will add them! (Screenshots coming soon, probably tomorrow and if there are any spacing issues blame the Forum idk why but it sometimes dose that to me and editing just makes it worse.

# Alive:

A few well working and still maintained projects.

**Giara:** Another really nice Reddit client using GTK4 that looks amazing and while it isn't totally smooth there really isn't much lag but it's resource usage seems fairly high since the Pinehpne gets hot quickly which could negatively effect battery life. I really like the overall UI and it packs a few nice features Headlines seems to lack like replacing Youtube with Invidious and Twitter with Nitter but I prefer Headlines overall. Giara is a very nice Reddit client and if the resource usage which already isn't even remotely comparable to the laggy GTK3 version gets improved even I may pick it in the future.

https://gitlab.com/gabmus/giara

**Quickddit:** A very nice Reddit client originally developed for Ubuntu touch which usually completely breaks any chance for compatibility with the Linux ecosystem but in this case the app is developed using web technologies which enables it to run under Arch and if you build it manually should also do so in others like PostmarketOS or Manjaro. Even if I wouldn't use Ubuntu Touch myself because of various reasons I have to admit it's UI is awesome and was far ahead of it's time when it came out and and Quickddit carries some of the practical parts over. It doesn't look that amazing to my eyes (at least under Phosh) but oh boy dose it deliver! There are basically all the features you could want, usage with or without account and also multi account, good performance, very practical look, option to reposition the top bar to the bottom for one handed use, dark theme, play gifs and videos and so much more. I only really use Reddit to ask for help with blog posts like this one so idk how much it means but Quickddit is my personal recommendation for a Reddit client on the Pinephone no matter the DE or Distro.

https://github.com/accumulator/Quickddit

For arch use AUR package ``quickddit``

git clone https://github.com/ubports/qqc2-suru-style

cd qqc2-suru-style

qmake

make -j4

sudo make install

git clone --recurse-submodules https://github.com/accumulator/Quickddit

vim [or nano] Quickddit/src/quickdditmanager.cpp #add API keys here, the project readme describes how to get them

cd Quickddit/ubuntu-touch

qmake

make -j4

Just run ./quickddit to start the app and try signing into Reddit. To install it permanently, you would have to create a desktop file and you might want to move it to /opt/quickddit or something.

Credit goes to Peter and his post https://linmob.net/reddit-clients-for-mobile-linux/

**Headlines:** A beautiful and buttery smooth GTK4 Reddit client that I will start to use myself after testing it for a while. I think it's still fairly new and already amazing. The smoothest experience of all clients in this post, all in GTK4 which is amazing for Phosh users like me, has all the features I need and with a beautiful UI. Definitely one of my recommendations specially for Phosh users!

# Dead:

Just a few unmaintained and not specially usable projects that I still want to mention.

**Something for Reddit:** You may need a microscope but with scale to fit this old GTK Reddit client actually works. It's not specially usable and had no updates in over three years so I have fairly low hopes for future mobile support but it's still a client so it will appear in the "Dead" section of this post with the short sentence or two you are reading rn.

https://github.com/samdroid-apps/something-for-reddit

**Reddit client GTK:** I haven't got it to build yet (needs cross compiling) and since it's a abandoned WIP Rust learning project so I am not to sure if it's worth it to do so.

https://github.com/johan-bjareholt/reddit-client-gtk

**Baconer:** Seems like this one was abandoned in very early development and probably with barely any mobile support even tho it looks like it w2as supposed to target mobile devices to me. It laggs really bad, the UI is very ugly and hard to navigate, it seems to straight up just load websites for some crap and they make the scaling issues even more obvious and is just generally unusable. There also wasn't any activity on the repo for over nine months so unless the Plasma mobile team picks it back up I don't have specially high hopes for the future. It's one of those many small Kirigami apps with no description and using qmake, most of which seem to have targeted Android (E.g. blabber).

Display sometimes overly reactive, jumps even when not touched
Posted by: Chimpy22 - 09-29-2021, 02:09 PM - Forum: General Discussion on PineTime - No Replies

Hi all,

I have had my Pinetime for about 3 weeks now and am not sure if I am dealing with a hardware or software issue. Kinda sure it was there from day 1, thats why I waited for it maybe to disappear with an update.

As said in the subject line, the display of my Pinetime is overly reactive sometimes and even after only slightly touching it skips over three or more screens. It is well visible in the "paint app" - sometimes lines mostly up/down appear even though I haven't touched it or have stopped touching it.

Am now on version 1.6 - is anybody experiencing the same issue and can advise me?

Best,
Chimpy

  Question regarding modem
Posted by: AntonReiser - 09-29-2021, 05:18 AM - Forum: PinePhone Hardware - Replies (21)

I have one question:

The modem of my phone seems to do everything as it should except for one thing: It does not send text messages (SMS) apart from two cases (out of maybe 50-100 so far). By contrast, receiving messages is not a problem at all.

With the help of friendly people in this forum I found out that it is in all likelihood
-neither a software (Mobian, Ubuntu Touch, Manjaro Plasma)
-nor a firmware issue.

Is there anybody here who knows enough about modems to tell me whether this could be a hardware problem? Or is that simply impossible given that everything works except for sending text messages?

  Big thanks to Armbian!
Posted by: soupbowl - 09-29-2021, 03:32 AM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook - Replies (2)

I still love my Pinebook. It doesn't get as much love as it should since it's slower than my phone, but I've been trying various different operating systems out again to see what I think. However since the Pinebook Pro came out, this model has been treated as legacy. Quite sad since it's still up for sale, but there you go.

I've tried and got the following:

  • KDE Neon - Nice enough, but all of a sudden stopped updating and working for me. Was support dropped?
  • Manjaro - Not for me. Works well enough but I'm not a fan of Arch (personal preference) and I found it to be slower than Neon.
  • Q4OS - Omg, they have an XP theme that's super close! My leading choice at this point and really easy and comfortable to use.

And then I tried Armbian Hirsuite... I love my Pinebook all over again!

Hisuite is based on 21.04, so is surprisingly bleeding-edge for a laptop branch others consider legacy. But powered with XFCE4, it suddenly feels super speedy like it did when it first came out!

To give a familiar look and feel refresh, I installed the Chicago95 theme. The theme dev has worked really hard on this and it definitely shows as it feels like I'm running some kind of Plus! pack on Windows 95!

The only thing I've come across so far is the sound doesn't work? But at this rate I'm usng the Pinebook for productivity not entertainment purposes. It also boots via a UEFI solution so I think it also suffers from the Manjaro charging issue too sadly, so I'm planning on installng aufan ubuntu to the emmc if that becomes a problem (charging while using seems to work well).

Now don't get me wrong, you open an Electron app or Chromium and you can see the system visibly slow down, however I was able to run Visual Studio Code at a bearably slow speed! Impressive considering how chonky of an app VS Code is. And I mean with lots of extensions (I write PHP, Python and Java).

So a big thanks to the Armbian devs for keeping up support for this fantastic little cheap laptop. You guys really made me fall in love with it all over again.

  Attempts to 'log-in'
Posted by: bcnaz - 09-28-2021, 01:57 PM - Forum: General - No Replies

I have been logging into the forum for a few years now.

I prefer using Epiphany (Web) however I just tried 8 times to log in and it would not let me, something about mis-matched credentials ?

I switched to Firefox and logged in on the first try.

I am using DuckDuck on both browsers.

Is there a problem with the forum or website software blocking Epiphany from logging in.?
I was able to browse the forum with Epiphany before I tried to log-in.

  Porting android app to PP
