Comparing a Huawei smartphone to the PinePhone and Librem 5
Posted by: amosbatto - 10-12-2021, 10:38 AM - Forum: General Discussion on PinePhone - No Replies

I wrote a blog article that examined the differences in hardware and design between a Huawei smartphone from 2015 and the PinePhone and Librem 5. Feedback welcome.

How to increase sound volume when headphone jack is in use?
Posted by: lacriz - 10-12-2021, 10:15 AM - Forum: PinePhone Software - Replies (1)

I can imagine the default max. volume is so low to protect the internal speakers. No problem there.

However, when I plug-in my bluetooth speakers (because PP bluetooth audio does not work for me) or car audio (no bluetooth there) I find the maximum volume way too low.

I know from e.g. the video player Clapper (excellent btw!) that sound volumes of e.g. 150% are possible. So I guess there is some kind of CLI command that could be used/scripted/whatever? Pretty please?

Buyer beware: Pine64 is not checking their sales email, won't alter or cancel orders
Posted by: 3x5co - 10-12-2021, 08:57 AM - Forum: General Discussion on PinePhone - Replies (5)

I recently purchased a replacement screen for my PinePhone, which works great. However, I assumed, incorrectly, that there would be an adhesive screen protector in the box, and there wasn't. So, I went on the website and ordered one.

The default shipping for this order was by courier, and was 22 dollars (!) for a 5-dollar item. I didn't realize this until I received an email that my order was received, and the total was 27 dollars.

I quickly went back to the site and navigated to my orders, which returns a 404 page. So I responded to the email with CANCEL CANCEL in the subject line. In the email, I said I don't want to pay this exorbitant fee to have this screen protector delivered via courier.

I then sent another email stating that I would still make the order, if we could alter the shipping method. These emails went to sales@pine64.com and no one ever responded to them.

11 days went by, and just now I received another email that my order has been processed. I don't know why anyone would want to pay to have a courier bring them a screen protector, if it takes Pine64 11 days just to acknowledge the order. And since the site is broken, and since no one responds to the sales email, I have to now contact my credit card company to get this order cancelled. Chances are, I'll receive this thing anyway, at which point I suppose I'll have to send it back.

On a related note, if anyone knows of another screen protector, that fits the PinePhone, please let me know and I'll order it. I don't think I can keep ordering from Pine64 if the process is this dysfunctional.

Up to date guide on factory reset pinebook pro?

I'm not very familiär with flashing or installing operating systems on this type of machine (eMMC). Is there any written guides on how to do it? The best I've seen is the discussion in this thread .Do I need need an SD card (I don't have a spare)?

Pinephone plante après avoir passé l'écran de connexion
Posted by: matbos - 10-12-2021, 02:26 AM - Forum: Manjaro on PinePhone - No Replies

Bonjour,

Sad New PinePhone won't boot 9/10 times - Screen is on but stays black :(
Posted by: dante404 - 10-12-2021, 12:30 AM - Forum: General Discussion on PinePhone - Replies (8)

Hello,

I have recieved my second PinePhone (Beta Edition, 3GB/32GB) a few days ago. I wanted to have a "backup device" because my pmOS Edition PinePhone (3GB/32GB) with Mobian is my Daily Driver.

First strange thing was that the eMMC on the new Phone is about 500MB smaller than on my old one (not talking about Partitions here, but about the whole eMMC!  Huh ), therefore I could not just 'clone' my Daily Driver Phone partitions on the new one (via dd) as planned.

OK - So I installed Mobian with the latest (stable) installer on it (because of full disk encryption) and started to configure my stuff and install updates (via apt, did NOT manually switch to Mobian bookworm yet)... and reboot. Then I noticed: Most of the time, the Beta Edition PinePhone won't boot. The green LED lights up for a short time, the screen is on but stays black/shows nothing (waited 30 minutes one time). You then have to press the power button to shut the phone off and try again. At the beginning it booted after 3-4 tries and was normally usable, then it got worse (9/10 times). Yesterday I reinstalled Mobian with the installer (this time with ext4+FDE like my first phone, instead of F2FS+FDE), but it never booted afterwards. Gave up after about 12 tries and went to bed.

Posted it here because I don't know WHAT is the reason - I THINK it is some kind of hardware problem (because the phone has booted multiple times, a damaged operating system should behave the same way every time you boot I guess)... but I don't know of course.
I have not found a post about this specific problem in the forum.

Has anybody made similar experiences? What could be the reason?

Thanks for any reply/hint!  Sad

Best Regards,
Dante

--------------------------------
Edit: What I forgot to mention: Because of this problem (and several problems I had with my main phone in the past) I have upgraded the modem firmware from 01.001.01.001 (stock) to 01.003.01.003 (which works great on my main phone). Didn't help anything about the boot problem.

  Reminder App
Posted by: ragreenburg - 10-11-2021, 11:04 AM - Forum: Arch Linux on PinePhone - No Replies

I built a reminder app which is basically a quicker frontend for gnome-calendar. I originally built it for Mobian and it has a deb package but also the `install.sh` script will also install this on Arch. I personally think it is really nice because gnome-calendar takes a long time to load and get reminders set up so this is just a much quicker way to do it. One thing that isn't included in the install.sh script is installation of the dependencies which are listed in the README.org. I would love a bit of feedback on it if anyone finds it useful, I have been using it for close to two months now and really like it.

  Rock64 kernel panics
Posted by: clay - 10-11-2021, 09:43 AM - Forum: General Discussion on ROCK64 - Replies (15)

I have a Rock64 4GB board, and love the capabilities of it. Unfortunately, I'm running into a problem that I'm hoping for help with.

I'm suddenly experiencing constant kernel panics. I've tried DietPi, Manjaro KDE, Manjaro XFCE, and OpenMediaVault--each on 2-4 different microSD cards, but all of them experience kernel panics between 10-90 minutes after booting. It's a very frustrating problem.

I've looked through the forums here, and tried the things I could find (like inspecting the board for soldering issues), but the board seems okay, as far as I can see. I purchased the board through an official vendor (AmeriDroid), and got the power adapter they recommended, so I don't think it's a power supply issue. I submitted a help ticket since I've tried all the troubleshooting steps I could find in the forums, but was told that I still need to post this here. Perhaps someone has some additional steps I can try?

If you have any advice or help you can give, I would be extremely grateful.

Thank you very much!

How to remove weird desktop/homescreen icons?
Posted by: jojuma - 10-11-2021, 04:29 AM - Forum: Manjaro on PinePhone - Replies (2)

Hello,

it becomes annoying. Every update repairs things but seems to brake others. Overall I'm happy with it, but I'd like to be able to fix such things. Since I'm not that advanced, I hope you will help me. I took some screenshots, but when triggered, the slide down menu hadn't faded out completely, yet. Hopefully you recognize everything.

Currently I'm on Pinephone KDE (Manjaro/Plasma Mobile):
KDE Plasma Version: 5.22.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.86.0
Qt Version: 5.15.2
Kernel Version: 5.14.10-1-MANJARO-ARM

Problem 1:
When you look at the first screenshot, there appeared an icon "pinephone-speaker", or better no icon. If I tap it, nothing happens. What is that? How can I remove that 'icon' from the desktop view? Or better, how could I remove icons generally from here?

Problem 2:
Although I delete them every time, on my homescreen icons keep appearing after every boot. That happens even on a second homescreen, which is created for no purpose (see second screenshot). How can I remove them permanently?

Thank you for your help!

  PineTab for distance teaching
Posted by: ggna - 10-11-2021, 12:12 AM - Forum: General Discussion on PineTab - Replies (2)

Hi,

I am looking for a lightweight (and possibly cheap) tablet or 2-in-1 device, running linux (preferably Ubuntu, or Ubuntu Touch, where both MsTeams and https://openboard.ch can be installed), whose touchscreen is working under linux and compatible with/quickly responsive to a stylus.

Some connectivity is also required (wi-fi, hdmi for external monitor/projector, and a headphone+mic jack).

My main use for that would be distance teaching (I currently use a combination of laptop + wacom board, which is not so lightweight).

Microsoft Surface would be ideal (even though not so cheap), but its touchscreen is not compatible with Linux (let alone using it with a stylus).

A PineTab would be an option, but I am not sure about its responsiveness to a stylus, and it seems as if PineTabs are out-of-stock anyway.

Could anyone comment on the above? Is any PineTab Pro perhaps going to be developed and put on sale any time from now?

Many thanks and best regards,

Giuseppe.
