How to install Plasma Mobile in Archlinux
Posted by: Surehand53 - 06-13-2023, 05:33 AM - Forum: PineTab Software - Replies (14)

How to install Plasma Mobile with the original factory Archlinux from danctnix.

Install Plasma

First off, there is a meta package danctnix/danctnix-pm-ui-meta for plasma-mobile, hoever when installing it I got errors:

Quote:error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
plasma-mobile-settings: /etc/skel/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini exists in filesystem (owned by danctnix-plasma-desktop-settings)
plasma-mobile-settings: /etc/xdg/kwinrc exists in filesystem (owned by danctnix-plasma-desktop-settings)
plasma-mobile-settings: /usr/share/libalpm/hooks/90-powerdevil.hook exists in filesystem (owned by danctnix-plasma-desktop-settings)
plasma-mobile-settings: /usr/share/maliit/keyboard2/devices/plasmamobile.json exists in filesystem (owned by danctnix-plasma-desktop-settings)
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
error: could not set install reason for package plasma-mobile-settings (could not find or read package)
-> error installing repo packages
It turns out this comes from the package plasma-mobile-settings.

So, to install Plama Mobile you install the relevant packages from the meta package without the plasma-mobile-settings.

This is the list that worked for me:
Code:
pacman -S danctnix/plasma-mobile
pacman -S plasma-mobile-nm
pacman -S iio-sensor-proxy
pacman -S plasma-nano
pacman -S danctnix/plasma-mobile-sounds
pacman -S plasma-settings
(the rest is already installed)
Edit: added package plasma-settings. Thanks Frtodd

Log out and  you can choose Plasma Mobile as an option on the logon screen (at the bottom).

Plasma mobile works quite well with the Pinetab2.
Some finetuning would probably help. Especially as the plasma-mobile-settings are not there. It works anyway, though.

Install Mobile Apps

On the Plasma Mobile page is a list of mobile friendly apps.

I have found these helpful:
  • kclock (clock)
  • kweather (weather app)
  • qmlkonsole (mobile terminal)
  • PlasmaTube (youtube frontend)
  • AudioTube (youtube music app)
  • Vvave (music app)
  • Fractal (matrix client, works so so with mobile)
  • NeoChat (matrix client, works so so with mobile)
  • Edit: Tokodon (Mastodon client)
  • Edit: Index  (file manager)

Edit:
Here is a description of Plasma Mobile Configuration options:
https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=18457

Edit2:
On first use on you Login Screen (Display manager is sddm) you have to change the Desktop environment to Plasma Mobile

Using Signal on PinePhone in mid-2023?
Posted by: dante404 - 06-13-2023, 02:42 AM - Forum: PinePhone Software - Replies (47)

Hello community,

since I realized yesterday that adding new contacts or create/join groups doesn't work anymore in Axolotl (development is dead for months now, so it's good that at least sending/recieving messages in existing conversations STILL works for me... at least for the moment... Wink ):

How does the community use Signal today (if you use it) on your PinePhone?

- Still using the not further developed Axolotl like me?
- Using Signal-"Desktop" for Linux (self-compiled or pre-compiled like here)?
- Using Flare?
- Using something different?

Every Linux compatible Signal client (also Flare) I'm aware of NEEDS a Android/iOS device (which I don't have) with official Signal client for linking... except Axolotl... which was awesome but doesn't work completely anymore (and without developement it will becoming worse and worse for sure).

How do you use Signal (if you use it)?
Are there any alternative Signal clients I'm not aware of?
(Please don't mention stuff like Telegram, I'm the reason a few of my friends use Signal now, I can't come up with something different again now... Wink )

Best Regards & thanks for any suggestions,
dante404

Udemy not working on pinetab2 (danctnix)
Posted by: jbreese - 06-12-2023, 07:51 PM - Forum: PineTab Software - Replies (3)

When I try to watch a video on udemy I am getting the following message: " We tried several times to play your video but there was an unforeseen error."

I ran into this problem on my desktop a while back, but I can't remember what codec I needed to install to fix this issue.

PineTab 2 (arm64) thoughts and questions
Posted by: acruhl - 06-12-2023, 12:40 PM - Forum: General Discussion on PineTab - Replies (7)

Hello all. I got my PineTab 2 last week and it's been pretty fun so far. It's definitely not a replacement for the PineBook Pro.

I'm typing this on the PineTab 2 right now, pretty cool.

Questions:

1. Does anyone know of a case or device that makes this tablet "feel" or work more like a laptop? Meaning, I want to put it on my lap and I don't want the keyboard flopping around. I want it to open and work more like a real laptop. I've been looking and I can't find anything.

2. Is there a such thing as a supported WiFi and bluetooth adapter which is combined into 1 device? I use bluetooth pretty often. I have an adapter that should work, I just don't want to use a hub so I can have both devices active at once.

3. Is there some way to get packages from elsewhere? For example, there is no qemu package in the default repository. I don't know Linux well enough to know if I get packages from somewhere else if that will fundamentally break this. From BSD, an architecture is pretty much an architecture and the packages work on everything that has a given CPU.

Thoughts:

It's not super duper fast, but pretty reasonable for light tasks. I'm enjoying it. It's only just a bit slower than the PineBook Pro.

I had issues with Plasma when I pinned programs to the task bar. For example, if I pin Firefox to the task bar Plasma has issues when I log out and log back in. I don't know if that's a Plasma problem or a PineTab 2 problem.

I wish the battery life was longer but maybe this will get better over time with better hardware support.

Kinda wanting the RISC-V one now...

Has someone tried USB-C smartphone game pad?
Posted by: DrYak - 06-12-2023, 07:52 AM - Forum: PinePhone Pro Accessories - Replies (3)

Has some played around with smartphone-specific USB-C gamepads? I don't mean classical wired PC/Game console controller (e.g.: anything my Logitech). I mean the one specifically built for smartphone, where you dock the phone inside and the controller wraps around, reminiscent of Nintendo Switch's joycons (e.g.: Gamesir, .

The reason I am asking is that the one I've tried is a bit more complex that your garden variety PC gamepad.
They usually show up as two different USB HID device: A game pad and a touchscreen, and use an Android app in order to map inputs and gestures to the various buttons (this makes it possible to support games that only work with on-screen taps and swipes and don't support a controller) - (e.g.: the one I've bought by default maps one of the analog sticks as screen swipe).

So did someone try such gamepad and find a good way to map them on Linux?

Music Using headphones? Here's how to turn off the speaker!
Posted by: matrixzephyr - 06-11-2023, 07:02 PM - Forum: PineTab Hardware - Replies (1)

Step one: If you don't have alsamixer installed do so with the following command:

Code:
sudo pacman -S alsa-utils

Step two: Open alsamixer in the terminal with the following commmand:

Code:
alsamixer

Step three: Press the f6 key, press the down arrow until the default device PineTab is highlighted and press enter

Step four: press the right arrow key until speaker is highlighted.  Then press the M key to mute.

Experimentally, this doesn't seem to persist between reboots, so you don't have to undo it unless you want to use the speakers again without rebooting.  Just repeat the steps, as the M key toggles the mute status.

Also, this post was made on my PineTab 2.  Assuming my cat doesn't unplug my wifi dongle...

  Udating the firm,ware? Potential problems?

So I am reading over on UBPorts about updating the firmware which results in a different boot loader. Going from Uboot to Tow-boot

Is this a problem for any other distros out there for the PinePhone?

Pinetab2 without Wifi a comfort extra?
Posted by: Schlucker - 06-10-2023, 10:05 AM - Forum: General Discussion on PineTab - Replies (8)

It seems to me that you did not understand or fully comprehend what “the OS is still in Beta” meant; it is in the testing phase.

WiFi, cameras and blue-tooth are certainly not the most basic core capabilities of an OS as you stated, they are “comfort” extras. A simple example of core capabilities would be a working input and output device.

I have never seen anyone say/state/claim that the PineTab 2 is a superior piece of hardware, it’s in Beta testing for god’s sake, quit trolling.

My comprehension skills are more than adequate, I assure you.  I am also well cognizant of the bullying that goes on in Forums, particularly where the worst of it comes from people who think they are above all the rest when they don't like what others post.  So, believe me, having been involved with LInux since the late 90's and having also helped test beta versions of software before, I knew exactly what "in Beta" meant.  However, my purchase decision was based on what was posted on the website and the Pinestore, and only the camera was mentioned when core capabilities not yet functioning were disclosed.  No others were, yet vaguely implied to be of no significance, like the cameras.

Critical to making sales, it's suspiciously clear to me that WiFi was not mentioned, but instead only buried in other pages offsite and therefore not linked to the e-commerce page.  Moreover, someone else posting a total absurdity in this thread has said that the pad and keyboard was never offered to the public, but only to developers....but not enforced.  The obvious result of this is that it was most likely deliberately offered to the public with the intent to generate revenue because the first Pinetab was a flop.  And therefore it was reasonable to assume developers would likely not be rushing to the cash register this time.  But more importantly, how could anyone accurately define a market segment of developers or even forecast sales that would ensure adequate revenue to support manufacturing a new tablet when obviously Pinetab could not develop the OS themselves to run it?  So clearly, Pine would have needed gullible schmucks like me to fund "their marketing plan", words I use very loosely.    You could also observe that historically, that all products are offered to the general public by Pine as a routine sales policy. But the suggestion that WiFi is a "comfort extra" is laughable.  A tablet without a working wifi is useless.  A tablet was created for the sole purpose of providing access to the internet in a compact conveniently sized device.  Without WiFi, iIt's worse than useless, it's a waste of money.  Delivering a product to the public in this state is simply wrong.  And to omit any mention of wifi lacking in the OS at the point when you offer the product for sale, is blatant obfuscation and a failure to fully disclose the risks to the buyer up front.  Compared to the alternative Risk version, where you drive off any interest in it at all, the Arm version was by contrast depicted as a product for anyone wanting to test it out.  But to do that, it has to work.  It didn't.  It doesn't and Pine would have to have known that.

  Trying to install Mousai
Posted by: AndyM - 06-10-2023, 08:25 AM - Forum: PostmarketOS on PinePhone - No Replies

I have most of the dependencies sorted but have now come across

Code:
Run-time dependency libpulse-mainloop-glib found: NO

There is no libpulse-mainloop-glib development package as far as I can see but there is
Code:
libpulse-mainloop-glib-9999_git20220621-r0 - Pulseaudio mainloop-glib library

It may be the package I need, but I cannot seem to be able to install it. Can anyone help me please?

The answer was simple - install pulseaudio-dev
