So I Used to be really into Linux, Programming, Networking and basically anything to do with computers especially when I was trying to go to school for a degree in Computer Networking. Well long story short I ended up having to quit school but I at least was able to get a certificate so it wasn't all a waste and then I ended up having to go to work full time and it seemed like my interest and my hobby in computers fell to the wayside which I feel is a shame since I really enjoyed programming computers and being able to do things on Linux and even share Linux with others as a free alternative to windows that was better and didn't have all the bull crap involved.
Right now I got a part time job at the community college and just got a certificate in Electrical Technology and am extremely close to getting my associates degree. After I finish my associates degree I plan on taking the core programming classes and getting a certificate and associates degree in this since all my general education is already going to be done it will only take me 7 classes.
The one cool thing with my Electrical Technology certificate is I was able to get into Electronics and I plan to continue taking classes in this aswell. We learned to solder stuff and I did have a raspberry pi I was able to start being able to do stuff with it till I ended up frying it and haven't replaced it yet but that is a whole different story.
My question to you is will this laptop allow me to run basic networking tests, collect packets, and perhaps even be able to do a little bit of programming in C. Also will I be able to install different Linux operating system and play around with this stuff? I am kind of hoping that this is kind of a buffed up version of a rasberry pi, I would buy a system 76 however it is just out of my price range at the time. Is this a good starter laptop for linux for a poor college student who wants to learn about computers, networking, linux, and programming in C? Should I but the PRO version aswell or will the regular laptop suffice for the little projects that I want to do? I really would like to install slackware and ubuntu and perhaps FREEBSD just to mess around, I would also like to analyze packets using wireshark or whatever newer program they are using, I also would like to create some programs in C and C++ and perhaps perl... Is this going to be possible. I also would like to be able to browse the internet for information and be able to read articles and books on it pertaining to computers and computer networking.
This laptop will not be used for anything fun IE videos, games, etc so that is not going to be a problem, it is strictly a hobby/project computer which I hope to use to learn and get better at computers again.

Handwriting recognition app |

Hey there,
I am a German student at TH-Köln in my last semester and I am working on my final thesis.
My work is about the development of a note app that is able to recognize handwriting. Actually it is important for the project and the next steps to explore how far the state of such an app for the PineNote is. Is there anyone in this community who knows of such a software for the PineNote or a developer currently working on such a project? If there is someone who is developing such an app, it is in my interest to network and share experiences. Tips and experience reports also from general app development for the PineNote are welcome.
For the implementation of this software, I will use the cross-platform framework Qt with C++ as the programming language. I will also be using TensorFlow.
I would be very happy to receive comments and your opinion on the project idea and share your experiences.
Many greetings from cologne

External Touchscreen via DP-Alt Mode |

Hi,
I am trying to connect my thinkvision m14t touchscreen to the rockpro64. For the life of me, I can't get it to work.
Here is what i did:
I connected the screen to an external usb-c power source. Then connected to the rock. The wacom input source is recognized (until the screen goes into standby), but no Display is detected.
I tried
- Armbian
- Debian
- Manjaro generic
- Manjaro rockpro64 (gitlab)
- Manjaro with the old 5.7 Kernel for the pinebook pro (link) (this Kernel specifically has a patch to make DP-Alt mode work, and boots just fine on the rockpro64)
- Manjaro pinebook-pro image does not seem to boot.
I also flipped the usb-c wire multiple times.
What actually worked:
A mysterious wire from club3d (bi-directional usb-c to hdmi) actually gave the me video output from the rocks hdmi port. However, the screen needs an additional power source from its other usb-c port. The rock can't provide enough power from usb. So there was no way to make the wacom input available.
What i am thinking to do:
- Can i inject external power into an usb-c wire to power the rock and connect it to the rock at the same time? I already tried to do this with an usb-c dongle connected to the rock, which has external power. (Power is passed on, but no wacom input recognized by rock)
- Could i use a PCI- thunderbolt like the Gigabyte GC-TITAN Ridge to power and connect everything with a single usb-c wire? (I have a feeling the gpu won't send the video to the card, if the card were even to be supportet)
I also bought a Pinebook Pro. I thought i read about someone having connected the thinkvision m14t to it. But i could not get it to work either (tried many distros)
Thanks for any Info on this.

Realtime heartrate and accelerometer via bluetooth |

Hello!
I'm working on an interactive installation where I want some audio to react to visitors heart rate and activity. I am planning to stream realtime (or every ≈0.5 sec?) the heart rate and accelerometer data to a computer or Rasperry Pi or similar device via Bluetooth. That should be done for several hours a day.
I'm trying to find the perfect smartwatch to do it. Is something that can be done in a Pinetime? From my overview of the device, there should be no problem, but there may be some stuff that I missed. Those more experienced in the platform can advise me on any foreseeable issues?
Thanks!

How to find software app, on Arch Phosh? |

Hi, I have observed online that Arch on the Pinephone Pro has access to a Software app - faciliting the download of software, similar to the same function on the Mobian OS for Pinephone. However, I have noticed that it is not immediately accessible when Arch is installed.
Could anyone please advise me on the method to find and enable this function (the Software app)?
Thanks.

Unable to do initial setup of Weather due to keyboard |

When I launch Weather from the list of applications, I am prompted to "Search for a city or country". However, I am unable to enter text into the search field that pops up: once I tap any key, both the search field and the on-screen keyboard disappear. Are other people having this problem? How can I get around it? Unfortunately, I cannot plug a USB keyboard into the first-generation version of the Pinephone that I have.

Manjaro Plasma blinking cursor |

I have tow-boot on my SPI... I previously had Manjaro Plasma on the eMMC (I flashed it on there last year).
I put PostmarketOS on there (thinking it would fix the close lid, won't wake up issue) but has the same problem.
I try to put Manjaro 23/22 back on the eMMC (and SD card) and it is just stuck at the blinking cursor.
Wondering if anyone has dealt with this recently vs. from 2020.
tried 22.06 thinking older may work, this one flashing cursor as well and alternating green/red led

Tow-boot headaches. |

I've been playing with my PinePhone for a couple of months.
I flashed a few different OSs, and settled on Postmarket/Phosh.
Well, I hate the backend, so I wanted to switch to Mobian, and back to the Debian environment I'm used to.
Whelp, instructions on getting tow-boot installed are... wanting.
I downloaded the pine64-pinea64 tow-boot package to flash.
There's only one included img, shared.disk-image.img
I've used the various ways I know of to burn said image to the SD card.
Nothing seems to do anything, regardless of how I burn the image to the card.
One piece of info tells me that the phone came pre-installed with tow-boot or the like preinstalled,
but burning the Mobian install weekly file and attempting to reboot with that in place, just sends me into postmarket.
HELP!
