  Quartz64 Model A fan
Posted by: TeutonicTovarish - 05-19-2023, 08:18 PM - Forum: Quartz64 Hardware and Accessories - Replies (2)

Hi, I recently purchased a Quartz64 model A 4GB and installed DietPi using a 32gb SD card. Once done with setup, I installed it in its case and connected a fan (which I bought from the pine store) to the 2 pin connector on the board. The fan does not function. Do I have to install a fan controller? If so, would anyone have recommendations?

PhinePhonePro Suitable "spare" and extended life Batteries
Posted by: crocspot - 05-19-2023, 07:15 AM - Forum: PinePhone Pro Hardware - Replies (4)

Just wanted to confirm this aftermarket Samsung J7 Battery is a suitable "spare" battery for Pine Phone Pro (PPP) ?

https://www.ifixit.com/products/galaxy-j...nt-battery

Are there any known plans for Pine64 to ship "spare" batteries alone in the future or is it simply not worthwhile / economical ?

Seems unfortunate that we can get every other spare from the Pine64 store for PPP's except batteries ? (Appreciating the Lithium shipping difficulties)

I realize "normal" phones used for daily driving should be slim and light. I am happy to sacrifice for something bulkier that can still be fitted into a trouser or large shirt pocket that runs the POWA of Open Source Linux Big Grin More along the lines of the "Old Skool" PDA's (Where the Pine Keyboard headed of course)

I've grabbed a Pine Phone Keyboard with a view to using that so I can daily drive the PPP. Various Reviews describe "mixed" results especially noting the Phone USB C Port being unusable due to the Loop back Charging fault. Is there any news on a future hardware revision / keyboard update to resolve this fault ?

Purely as feedback in real life usage I've really only bought the keyboard for the 6000 mAh battery. No disrespect to all that brought this wonderful keyboard and battery to life. I do find it as a keyboard to be very clunky in daily usage. Noting there are so many suitable, accessible and in-expensive self powered Bluetooth options out there that I find much more usable and closer to a full "featured" touch typing keyboard. (Well as best as can be in a folding style !)

e.g. something like

https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07...UTF8&psc=1

Is it not worth developing a factory Pine64 extended life battery back and molded cover similar to a few of the projects posted on these forums ?

(Otherwise time to assemble my 3D Printer currently in it's box !) Wink

Noting the on average 4 hours Battery time I'm getting out of the Factory on board 3000 mAh PPP Battery using default Mobian. Just wondering what any PhinePhonePro daily drivers / "warriors" are using for real world extended battery life currently ?

I see reference in the custom batteries post for PhinePhonePro to the Samsung S20 Ultra Battery as well. Wondering If anyone has supplier links that might be suitable for Australia at all ? Most comments are for US, European or Asia sources which can be a problem when shipping Lithium products to Australia.

I'm searching for and testing some suitable extended battery life (Accessible) battery options suitable for the PPP in Australia and will post results as I have them.

Any assistance gratefully appreciated in advance Smile

  Star64 questions
Posted by: tantamount - 05-17-2023, 03:58 PM - Forum: General - Replies (3)

I just received a Star64 and I have some questions.

I assumed I could power it by USB-C but apparently there is no such port,
and the power supply was not included. On the product info page there is
not a strong emphasis on this detail, and there is no suggestion that I should buy
a power supply with the Star64. It's not a "related product". I feel this is
an oversight. But the question now is, if the only possibly compatible
AC adapter that I have is only 2 amps at 12 V, will that suffice?

Secondly, is there any official support from a major distro that would
be applicable to this board, given that it uses a well known processor?

  Something about Maemo Leste
Posted by: merom - 05-17-2023, 03:11 PM - Forum: Maemo Leste on PinePhone - No Replies

I put Maemo Leste on the sd card, ran it and it really works on the pinephone. The images are from an older system where QtWebBrowser could not be installed but Chromium worked. When typing on the virtual keyboard, the font didn't show up in Chromium, but it could be highlighted, copied, and pasted.

Phone calls even work, SMS can be sent and received and will appear in conversations. Connection via the operator's mobile data also works, but the APN context must be set after starting the system for the first time. I don't have a physical pinephone keyboard, so I had to turn off PP and modify the sd card in PC.
It is still not comfortable to use, but a significant improvement can be seen.

  PineTab2 - EU batch?
Posted by: WhiteHexagon - 05-17-2023, 01:22 AM - Forum: PineTab Hardware - Replies (6)

I recently bought a PinePhone via your 'EU only' offer, which was a great help in not having to deal with the crazy customs here, thanks! Smile  I made some progress with development, but I am thinking I'd like to work with something a bit more powerful like the new PineTab2.  Are there any plans to release an EU batch of pineTab2 devices?  I can you have US stock, but with $40 shipping, plus probably ~70EUR import processing fees, it makes the device quite expensive.

When we tilt our Smartphone from Portrait to Landscape... How does it know that we're tilting our phone?

That's because of the Accelerometer inside our Smartphone! To understand how it works, let's snoop the raw Accelerometer Data from PinePhone with Apache NuttX RTOS (Real-Time Operating System)...

I would like to put together a printable enclosure for the Star64 but cannot find mechanical dimensions for things like holes and connector placement.  Can anyone provide that kind of information?

Thanks

Star "pineflow": my (fairly early) concept/entry for the community logo contest

(repost from the Telegram/Discord chat:)

Hello everyone! Here's my entry for the community logo contest. It's not entirely a logo idea, but rather an identity rebrand concept for the PINE64 community. For now this concept is called "pineflow". Using a minimal color palette (only +1 from the original 3 blu-ish colors used in the pinecone logo) with white backgrounds, the new logo and the infographic packages aim to deliver a modern, decently vibrant & practical visual style with good readability. The design is also flexible and could be adapted for various needs (for example, optional shape/color indicators could be included before the logo subtitles or the title text in announcements)

(Sorry for the lack of examples, since PINE64's news announcement is the only use case I could think of for now)

This is a preliminary design, so all suggestions are appreciated! btw, If this concept is ultimately chosen as the community's new visual identity, I would hand in the infographic template SVG as well as the logo to the community for use in future news/announcements or in other fields. I would also be glad to work on future updates, improvements and maintenance for this set of graphic packages as a volunteer :)

(sorry if the preview looks blurry; perhaps that's an issue with my HiDPI screen, since I'm using scaled KDE)

possible FAQs?
- IMO the original pinecone logo is decent enough, so I focused more on a graphics package rebrand besides doing minor tweaks to the logo itself.
- For the "store" logo suffix: I'm now aware that Pine Store Ltd is a separate entity, so perhaps I'll make a separated one for it in the future.
- No smooth color gradients are used in the text section of the logo; these are discrete color chunks with fairly sharp edges. My original idea was indeed to use gradients, but that was scrapped since the description of the contest reads "no gradients; a minimal color palette is preferred").

  pacman vs. Discover - again
Posted by: jojuma - 05-15-2023, 06:53 AM - Forum: Manjaro on PinePhone - Replies (4)

Hi,

some time ago I was told to run updates via pacman since Discover isn't trustworthy.
I am doing that for quite a time now.

But even if pacman tells me the system is up to date, Discover keeps informing me about available updates which becomes annoying...

My question is now:
Why is that? I'd think Discover is kind of based on pacman or from where does it retrieve its information?
Is Discover definitely wrong, when pacman claims the system is up to date? Should I run the updates via Discover or should I really permanently ignore it?

Thanks!
