Should we just unxz and then dd the image onto a MicroSD card? My initial attempt resulted in the PBP not booting and giving no visual feedback on the screen.

You do not have UART by any chance do you? and yes, just dd the image.

I do. I'll work on getting that setup.

I know for a fact that it boots from eMMC ... but haven't been tested with the custom uboot that allows booting OVER the default build from SD

If you use other images it might mess with bootloader. It is advised to remove other medias before booting it.
