pinephone 3 ideas
#1
So i was thinking about it a little and since i know pine has not announced a new phone, i thought i could include a wish list for the nect phone, here it goes without breaking the bank.

1. 12 nano meter processor, to help power management of course maybe especially.

2. esim for travel. replace sim card alot and put it in new spot or do away with the sim card altogether.

3. lcd display 1080p

4. 6.1 bezzel less display

5. maybe some dust and water resistance like galaxy s5 with galaxy s7 waterproofing plugs

6. sharper camera, maybe take from iphone x camera

7. 5g and maybe possible satalite bands, even of not possible to be used right now, haave for later

Thanks.

i don't know precise details of manufacturing process. general view is, smaller the process is more efficient cpu is. i'm not sure it is in all cases. battery life is important though. basically, longer battery life is more crucial than cpu power.

i don't think esim is a good idea. physical sims have some advantages, like swappable and removable, and if it is nano-sim, it is already quite small. esim is like installable system, once installed then it is there. installation process by modem chip may not be strait forward, although it is done by modem chip rather than phone o.s..

in my area, some operators charge every esim card installation, i wonder why.

yes, but physical size needs to be bigger as well. also for battery.

i would go bigger direction, although key reason is bigger battery.

if phone is possible to open, i don't think phone will have good water resistance. in a limited degree it's probably possible.

camera may have those driver issues, which may limit choices.

satellite bands, could you specify further?

if you refer to microwave bands in nr5g, they will come in the future. microwave bands coverage is quite small, they are useful for some, but near useless for others.

current implementation of nr5g is non-standalone. i think nr modules are slightly too expensive at the moment. however when standalone mode becomes more available, i probably change my mind.

if you refer to actual satellite communication, i don't think is a good idea, few users use it, and device has some unnecessary hardware modules.

You dont need to go bigger, iphone mini is prime example of a small phone with great optomization on battery life.
Satalite bands are for what other companies are doing right now. Apple and Samsung current and futute plans.

So we have the custom fabbed Rockchip RK3399S on the Pinephone Pro, most of the work to be done is getting reasonable mobile(vs desktop optimized) power usage in software especially compiling the OS components and apps(or implementing a hardware access layer) for utilizing GPU vs CPU and other hadware acceleration.
https://opensource.rock-chips.com/images...200323.pdf
Getting a 'good' CPU and chipset which we have sufficient datasheet information to write open source drivers vs closed source blobs or clean room probing the hardware is difficult, for example the Linux Nokia 900 and Android(Linux) phones often can't be upgraded or use non Android distros because the manufacturer has EOl'ed the component or perhaps only ever released one compiled blob driver for a single Linux/Android kernel.

Probably means the L-band Globalstar simplex rx-only service used by Apple(who bought 20% of GSAT) and SPOT gadgets for SOS and SMS-like sending for hikers. AAPL did some cellular modem baseband hacks for iphone17 and beyond, not so difficult when you can buy the 'secret' information.
<edit>
for those who want to add a little satcom module to your pinephone it is about $100 https://www.globalstar.com/en-us/products/iot/stx3
postage stamp sized transmitter, would need to 3D print an add on bulge to your battery cover.

FWIW, you can have a cheap phone that you can disassemble, which is also water resistant. All the original water resistant ("waterproof" for some depth) phones were disasemmbleable for battery and sim card replacement.
