Librem 5 (finally) shipping
#1
Purism's blog post and FAQ.

I'm very interested to see what state the software will be in, keeping in mind what a buggy mess Phosh on the Pinephone still is. Will any of you be plopping down almost a grand (or two!) for it? Comparisons between the Librem 5 and the Pinephone would be very interesting, especially considering their pricing, now that hardware for both has been "finalized" (I don't expect major revisions beyond 1.2 for the PP) and shipping.

A long but insightful thread from someone who received it: https://forums.puri.sm/t/received-my-lib...reen/10877.

Another person on Reddit also received their Librem 5: https://www.reddit.com/r/Purism/comments..._heres_my/.

Thanks for the links, I'm looking through them now. An interesting tidbit from the Purism forum thread by Todd:
Todd Weaver (emphasis mine) Wrote:Right now the Librem 5 has the essential, core functionality we have been focused on completing to give it a good foundation for the rest (Calls, SMS, Web, Email etc). Along the way we’ve been able to get some extra features added that will start to show up soon like plug-and-play convergence.
"[H]as essential, core functionality"? Sound familiar? Big Grin (RIP @LinAdmin2)

Also, plug-and-play convergence "will start to show up soon"? They're shipping the product, and one of the main selling points is still not implemented? What on earth have they been doing for the past 2+ years? I thought they were delaying shipping Evergreen until the software was ready! Had I backed the Librem 5 and deferred my pre-order to the Evergreen batch, waiting years and getting essentially the same functionality as the Pinephone, I'd be very disappointed.

Either way, I wanted this thread to be here for someone who has both the PP and L5 to chime in and give some comparisons: how is the modem (mis)behaving, call and text quality and reliability; how are the killswitches, can you turn them off and back on without having to restart the phone to restore functionality etc.

It is implemented, however it's not yet upstreamed and requires some hacks. By the time most people get their phones, it will work very well (unlike for Pinephone, which lied about it and sold unfixable broken hardware).

I like this comparison between the phones: https://social.librem.one/@dos/104767475144787918

They work instantly and reliably, there are videos about it on the Purism Youtube channel.

The Librem 5 looks interesting but is just too rich for my blood. The Pinephone comes in at a great price point for experimentation and it should be pretty usable as a daily phone as development continues. It's nice to have that choice out there though for those who are willing and able to spend that much for a phone.

for a phone priced comparible to an Android or iPhone, it had better work as well as one of those, or have the hardware potential to be better than them at specific tasks.

too pricey for me with not enough freedom. the Librem is a very closed ecosystem

It does have the hardware potential to be better than those: https://source.puri.sm/Librem5/community...e-librem-5.

What is closed about it? It's the only phone recommended by the FSF. It's not precisely open hardware yet, but far ahead any other phone, including Pinephone.
