I can't put the sim card in the slot

I tried several ways to put the sim card in the l lower slot. 
First, I pushed it all the way in and as a result the card almost completely disappeared in the slot, but the phone didn't recognise it. It was very difficult to take it out, I had to use a needle to force it out. It took me quite some time to take it out. I am afraid I damage the simcard. 
What is the proper way of putting the simcard in the slot?

No, I don't have any adapter. I just took the sim card out of my android phone and I try to put it in the  pinephone as it is.
Should I buy an adapter?

Yeah, that'll work.  You should just need the yellow one (nano to micro)

My recent PMOS Pine phone came with the sim adapter.
It is easy to miss, it is taped with clear tape to the inside of the phone package.
Extremely little.

+1 my UBPorts came with 2 different ones that each had a different fit (both for the same size sim)
