Delivery to Russian Federation
#1
Hi guys. Had a very unpleasent experience with pipephone delivery. Was waiting for two months for phone after it was produced and its never been sent. And irder was canceled only after few weeks after i wrote to sales team. Thats the background. Is there any chance to deliver to Russia as finaly last batch never went to our country. Also if there is a problem sending with batery maybe its better to send without battery as its standard size and could be bought at any phone service point.

Pine is not allowed to ship the phone to Russia because Russian authorities seem to dislike strong encryption and there are no shipping routes anyway these days: https://www.pine64.org/2020/07/15/july-u...e-version/

This is bullshit.

RU allows also strong encryted iPhones, Linux, Windows machines directly imported.

if You have problems with the tamoshenik You can send it to Finland and take it from there to Sankt-Petersburg. Or You have someone who brings the phone to You. Never ever any problem. Where do You reside in Russia?

IF read the correct please:

#################
This regulation may apply to consumer related products, such as PCs, mobile phones, and other equipment for communication and/or data processing. The Russian customs service will hereafter check that the importer of such equipment has a required “notification” (license) issued by the “Center for the Licensing, Certification and Protection of State Secrets of Russia” (LMTP Center of FSB, ref. http://www.tsouz.ru/db/entr/Pages/polog219.aspx), which has to be arranged by the Russian importer
################

MAY apply and the importer have to license it.

Apple sells millions of items in Russia with encryption capability, so do Samsung, Sony and all other companies.

Looks like the russians want to have only official ways for import. This is no problem for most companies, but Pine delivers direct. Also we have big problems with in the EU with the lack of EU-CE approvals. Lots of phones from Pine were sent back from the german customs.

What Pine cannot do what Apple and others have absolutely no problem?

As far as I know, this regulation has been cancelled since 2018.

Here you can find the text that cancels the regulation, and here is the full text of regulation in its current form (both in Russian).

Namely, based on (I.5): persons can import devices with strong cryptography for their own use without a "notification" if the device type is in the list.

The list (see Addendum 5) explicitly includes:
  • desktops, notebooks, smartphones etc.
  • without an OS or with installed popular OS (Linux, windows, MacOS, Android, iOS etc.)
PinePhone is a smartphone with installed popular OS Linux Smile
Therefore, I believe, it is enough to send an invoice that certifies that person buys a device for its own use (as a natural person, not as a legal entity), and write on a parcel that it contains a smartphone "PinePhone" with OS "Linux".

Have you tried it? Was there problems at customs?

I think the only way this issue may be resolved is if Pine finds an importer/reseller they can work with on the formalities, like Ameridroid in the US...
