[update] Rockchip just released the Android 9 SDK today and porting process will start on next week. Hopefully we will able to release Android 9 build for Rock64 before end of thos month. Keep my finger cross.

Please tell that it will have a regular "tablet UI" as well which will be usable with touchscreen displays. TV UI is absolutely unusable with touchscreens

The received SDK from Rockchip is the Android TV SDK. The upcoming Android 9 for ROCK64 still maintain as Android TV.

So it will remain unusable for everyone who wants to hook up the board to a touchscreen... Could you at least remove the need to double tap on any icon to open the app/setting when using the board with a touchscreen and add optional navigation bar (Home, Back, Recent) so that users can navigate in apps and menus.

What Proper Android TV OS is touchscreen compatible that you know of on any device ??
Unless you're referring to some hacked Chinese rom on dubious Chinese Android TV Boxes ??
Android TV is designed to work on a TV Screen so i fail to understand how you would expect this OS to be modified for a touchscreen.

Well I had a couple of Android TV boxes and sticks which have navigation bars that can be hidden in launcher options.

It's definitely possible to create an AOSP firmware with a navigation bar from AndroidTV OS and vise versa.
The navigation bar just have to be unhidden and the ATV Gapps replaced by phone Gapps and a little testing done to see if everything works.

Thanks. I also have a Le Potato board from Libre Computer and they have an option to select the launcher. If you select the AOSP type launcher you will have the navigation bar by default while selecting the TV launcher you will get a stock TV UI

Another 3 weeks since the last news and still no update.
I hope Android Pie will still happen before the end of the lifetime of the device because
Rockchip RK3530 will be released in 3 months time with a faster CPU, GPU than RK3328 with the same price point and RK3588 the beginning of 2020, then everyone will have forgotten about Rock64 that still runs Nougat.

Development boards need to have better support than ordinary devices.
Imagine if Odroid(S922) or Radxa(RK3399) spend 6 months to release an OS update after their competitors, they would be out of business.

I should try to be more positive and still hope for the best Smile

Another week with empty promises.

If there is no time to build a firmware, at least release the SDK so users can build it themselves.

Aim to release the Android 9 build on next week.

The SDK already in the middle uploading to file server, this is a 100GB tarball :-(

Good news Smile

If possible, please don't upload 100GB tarballs or upload separate smaller one.
Unpack SDK into source code files first like kernel, uboot, frameworks, hardware, device etc.
Then remove hidden .git history folders in root folder of SDK and compress to tar.bz and split into 10 files.
Hidden .git folder can be downloaded separately by users and placed into SDK folder for users that have fast internet and want to use it, otherwise it's just a waste of bandwidth and space used.
Can upload kernel, uboot folders to Gitlab/Github with git history to browse easily.
SDK's are usually only 15GB compressed without git history and will upload much faster.

i got an idea. since tllim stated the 100G tar was in the middle of uploading it stands to reason that there is gonna be a 100G tarball. so why don't you download that tar and break it down like you think it should be and then find a platform to put it on and then make links available to the community?   that way you do something to help out the community and also do something other than bitch about what is or is not available.  afterall, you are finally getting what you wanted and you  complain about the format?  if you think there is a better format why don't you contribute and offer the format you think is better?
