Easiest way to flash eMMC

If I only contribute one thing to the rock64 project, I think this should be a good one.

Looking around at instructions and documentation to write an image to the eMMC, I have not come across this yet and it's blowing my mind.

eMMC to microUSB adapter ($1.50):
http://www.hardkernel.com/main/products/...5415955758

I have an oDroid XU4 with an eMMC module, and this is the adapter I've been using to write an image to it (via dd on OSX).  Done the same with my ROCK64, and I think this is something everyone should own if they play with SBC's with eMMC, and I think PINE needs to source these and add them to the store.  In my limited testing, worked like a charm with ayufan's Debian Stretch Minimal image (just straight up used dd to write to the eMMC on my hackintosh, and booted straight to it).

Enjoy.

I love this idea.  $1.50, what a deal!  Sadly, shipping is $16 for a total price of $17.50.  Wow, that seems like a serious premium; I have a very hard time paying >10X product price for basic shipping....

Update: Here is the same product for about $7 including shipping from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074HQ4QHF/_en...7BYC0PSHZB

Good find.  I didn't look around anywhere else, and just linked the actual product I have.  I bought it when I bought my XU4 a while back, so I didn't even think shipping would be so high.

You will find an Odroid supplier near you if you ask nicely they will send you one even though they are usally supplied with eMMC.
I managed to get one from https://www.odroid.co.uk/ just emailed and asked.

Damn sight easier than the faff without one as just use like a SD.

I've looked all over the place and couldn't find a reasonably priced odroid adopter (I live in the UK) - shipping is just not worth it.
Now that people have started looking into adopters I think its OK to make it public that there will be a USB -> eMMC available in the foreseeable future for Pine devices.

Wink
Hi Stuart
These are normally only sold with the eMMC modules but, if you require, we can supply

a single unit for £2.00+VAT. Carriage is £1.50.

Kind regards

I did tell them I had lost mine but can not find one on the store  Cool

Damn you're sneaky. Also, wonder how quickly they'll catch on thats something is up now that people will start mailing them with requests to replace 'missing' adapters Wink

I acquired an  eMMC <---> SD card  adapter
  from Ameridroid.Com ....

    https://ameridroid.com/products/emmc-adapter
    $3.95 US  +  $3.95 US shipping

Just got a 32 gb eMMC in the mail today
  from the Pine64 store ....

I have cloned a working debian stretch minimal sd card
using  dd  and  two usb3 card readers in a powered
usb3 hub on another debian buster pc ....

      # dd if=/dev/sdx of=/dev/sdy bs=3g status=progress

The cloned sd card boots and runs fine
on the rock64 with 4 gb memory ....

I also have a working debian stretch lxde sd card
that I would prefer to  dd  the eMMC ....

I think this method should work ok
but am not 100% sure about it ....

Did you  dd  to the eMMC from a working sd card
or from a freshly downloaded image ?

I would prefer to use my working sd card as a source
since it's already configured as I prefer and up to date ....
