Rock64 - Windows 10
#1
Just discovered all of this, this week, so sorry for the newb question and sorry if it is mentioned somewhere else but I did not see it posted.

Is there a Windows 10 image being worked on for the Rock64? I would love to build one of these and replace a 2nd Gen Roku with one. I would like to build it as a Windows HTPC. I am just comfortable with Windows and feel like it would be the easiest for anyone that would use this in my house that is not IT savvy like myself.

Would the Android or one of the Linux images be a great solution for what I want to use this for?

Thanks,

The simple answer is, no.

... however,  there is a "Think Tank" in Tansania (kuku.org) which is developing an image (android core) that "looks"  and  "feels"  like W10;  they call it  M17.

In order for that to happen, a board would have to be sent to Microsoft and go through some certification process. This happened with the Pine A64, so it's not out of the question for the Rock64. But even if it did happen, it would be the IoT version of Windows 10; far from suited for HTPC tasks.

For a media device like you want, your best bet would be the Android TV image. It's designed to be run on TVs, is very easy to learn and use, and has the ability to use basically any local media or streaming service you want.

Your desire to build a small HTPC is a good driver to move beyond windows. Smile The IOT build of Windows is, IMO, pretty useless.

Yeah, their usual technique of embrace, extend, extinguish pretty much failed with SBC(s) ;  one, because the entire SBC market is just intellectually out of their grasp (like their phone) and two,  because people don't trust their cloud services which Win IoT was meant to leverage !

From a development perspective, the last thing I want in my IoT maker shop is windows; its an intermediate step ( and party ) which is not necessary and just gets in the way.

YMMV

Actually there is Microsoft are porting to Arm64 how long that is off I dunno.

One of the weirdest turns is that Microsoft might take on Intel in the battle for x86 emulation with there WOW (Windows on Windows) emulator as there standard apps will run on ARM64 through emulation.
