No Video Out on PBP on all major distros
#1
Sad reality, but video out on pinebook pro was regressed on all major distros

this includes default factory os manjaro

Found some info that kernel patches needed to allow video out were dropped since were hard to maintain

I guess with years interest for PBP dropped, as well as support for basic functionality from developers.

For example, cannot believe that in 2019 there was mrfixit debian build with all the working functionality that you could easily flash to sd card, while now 4 years later you cannot connect pbp to external monitor or tv

Any suggestions how to make it work again would be appreciated

Does it work on any minor distrus?

Perhaps NetBSD is in a better situation: HDMI video output never worked, but we are still looking forward to having it working.

Sorry, i dont have a fix. Just wanted to add my voice, i am hoping for a fix to this also, posted about this issue a year or so ago.
It actually used to work when i first got the pbp, it stopped working directly after an update. I dont remember which one. This is on the shipped manjaro.

I tried:

manjaro
armbian
ubuntu
endeavouros
postmarketos
fedora

feels like a waste of time, to be honest

some bits of info online mention difficulty developers had maintaining patches for video out, so they dropped:

I do maintain for myself changes that were once present in https://github.com/megous/linux, though I can't find them anymore there, and with some additional small fixes HDMI works fine for me for quite some time. Currently on 6.3.4:

great, thanks for the suggestion

you apply patch on manjaro kernel?

also out of curiosity, can you get 4k or 1080 resolution out of pbp display out?

Nope that's a patch from kernel built in PLD Linux. But I don't see any reason why it couldn't be applied against Manjaro kernel.

Biggest screen I hook up into PBP is 2560x1440 and it drives it just fine.

Let us be realistic here.
There is working alt-dp support in Manjaro but only if you use the special Pinephone pro kernel which unfortunately has no NVME support

My experience so far over countless hours with my Pinebook Pro has been one of solid fail in that
1) My board revision is apparently new and does not match the pictures on the wiki which caused initial confusion when installing Armbian
2) Attempts to use the patched kernels for the pinebook pro fail. Type C DP port negotiation appears to work even with mainline 6.1 and 6.3 kernels and will try and initialise the display port but negotiation fails between the fusb230 and the Rockchip cpu. This does not happen with the pinephone pro kernel in Manjaro
This suggest there has been a hardware change to where the i2c port for the fusb230 is located as my kernel reports in Armbian that there is no i2c connection to the fusb230.

However everything else functions correctly.

Any updates on this? Trying to roll my own kernel on Gentoo for the PBP but I haven't been able to get DP out working
