Has anyone else seen anything like this? For reference, this is from the first january batch of explorer editions. I would suspect a differing SPI flash chip perhaps due to chip shortages, but the "all ff's" tell me it's probably more likely related to the nasty reset thing I had to do to get it to boot in the first place. Has anyone else had similar issues trying to boot the spi installer, or using it?
Oddly enough, WIP3 installs.. odd... Maybe I can now install WIP4. Will update.
Confirmed. If you have the above errors with WIP4, try doing the following:
With WIP3 loaded SD card in the phone, reinstall battery and hold the reset and volume down buttons while powering up the phone. hold these until you see the Tow-Boot installer. Install WIP3. Then do the same thing with the WIP4 installer, without messing with the reset button.
Now to enjoy the full speed of my PPP, and with the SD card being a home or ext. data partition, as it should be!
I installed the WIP4 without any problems , I think you held up the RE buttons for too long and the emmc was completely disabled thus making tow-boot install impossible
Tow Boot should not depend on eMMC presence, but it looks like RE button also disables SPI along with eMMC leaving SD as the only boot option. This makes sense as otherwise there would be no way to recover from a corrupted SPI loader as SPI has the highest boot priority.
I've used Tow Boot to export eMMC and write mobian image to it. Running fine for the last two weeks.

Like others here, I used an sdcard to install tow-boot, then reflashed it with the Mobian installer, which has an option to install to eMMC. Worked great! Doing distro-hopping without an sdcard is going to be nearly impossible but best phrased as impractical. A 128GB sd is like $18 on Amazon. Your computer will need an sd card reader, and if you're using Windows and not linux, use something like Rufus for flashing.

I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to do that. Sadly, I have the "no internet blues". Do you happen to have a link to download Manjaro Plasma for the PinePhone Pro? If I can find a site I will download and checksum it. I forgot which Manjaro I have, but something is making me "think" 4.6.?

Download the WIP4 image for PInephone Pro, extract it, flash the SPI installer image to your SD card, hold volume down when powering on the phone, click install.
No need to use a WIP version, Tow-Boot has an official release: https://github.com/Tow-Boot/Tow-Boot/releases.
