Not running Armbian currently but I was having the same problem some time ago. (also tried Armbian with same result)
I think it mostly depended on the kernel I was using, check here for details on my journey.
Now a few days ago I updated to the latest kernel from Ayufan and USB3 / Ethernet performance has been great. Getting a solid 90MB/s download and 70MB/s upload to my Rock64.
Currently running:
kernel: Linux rock64 4.4.120-rockchip-ayufan-213 #1 SMP Sun Apr 29 20:27:33 UTC 2018 aar
on the bionic beaver ubuntu image from here[url=https://github.com/ayufan-rock64/linux-build][/url]
If you decide to check it out and still get sucky performance let me know and I will post my samba config, I took a few some tweaks from the OMV config which I think also helped.
Now the only thing I am missing is the ability to run kodi with HW acceleration from Ubuntu..
