I do not believe that this is true at all. Different firmware, different CPU. I tested the pinebook-pro images on my pinebook 1080, and they would not boot at all, despite those images are made using the same script that mine are.
I just uploaded some fresh images using the 5.4.104 kernel. These work great and have passed all of my preliminary tests.
Note: if you do not want to boot into a graphical login, then start with the base image and build up from there. You can stay on the console level as long as you desire. I also have not been liking Xfce since the latest batch of updates, so I have been using other lighter window managers, Blackbox and JWM being my personal faves. That way, you save a bunch of RAM and get back the snappy response. As always, YMMV, depending on what you are trying to achieve.
