This issue seems to be related to Phosh and has been covered here. post # 406 in the long thread Debian+Phosh

It seems it was resolved in Mobian, but maybe not PMOS yet.
I just realized if the proximity sensor is covered, the touch screen turns off. So it shouldn't behave like described when in a pocket, only when out in the open.
The Goodix GT917S Datasheet shows
Normal mode operating current @120Hz - 32 mA
Green mode operating current@32ms③ - 3 mA
Gesture mode operating current④ - 0.8 mA
That's interesting that the hardware is capable of 120 Hz.
