I am not sure of somebody else is working on that, but could be very interesting to have a minimalistic Linux for the pinephone. For example, without any GUI, just a black screen, a good virtual keyboard and a set of useful but powerful commands.
1) Make a call.
2) Receive a call.
3) Send a message.
4) Check messages.
5) Take a picture.
6) Take a video.
7) Check media (pictures and videos)
And, of course, run a browser. Oh yes, Firefox has a problem with postmarketOS (maybe also with Ubuntu Touch) ... the virtual keyboard is not activated when you are in a text field.
It is not necessary to look similar to iOS or Android. There are many different metaphors to follow, and not to have icons is one of them.
