If you want to install it manually:
Code:$ wget http://security.debian.org/debian-security/pool/updates/main/t/thunderbird/thunderbird_60.9.0-1~deb8u1_armhf.deb
# dpkg -i thunderbird_60.9.0-1~deb8u1_armhf.deb
Debian 8 is supported till June 30 2020. If you want to track security updates for thunderbird, you have to figure out how to add exactly this deb package to your /etc/apt/sources.list file.
Yep, that works for me
Installed as per wget command above, and it works just fine. I've locked the installed version until I figure out the correct entry in sources.list for tracking Debian 8 updates.
Thank you for the info

Perhaps try Evolution (?) that also ships in the original Debian....

Tried Evolution and it works as does geary , but I prefer to stick with thunderbird as I use it across most of my devices.
I think I'll switch to Evolution for now. Partly also because I'll need some of evolution's back end to add my CalDav calendar accounts anyway. I was trying Claws Mail, but its insistence on creating IMAP folders for "Queue" is annoying. I hope Thunderbird gets fixed in the future. I too prefer using it on devices where it can be used.
