At the base level, it should have asked you to assign a command key, Windows or Ctrl (I think). Once up, that key and Enter brings up the terminal. I'm guessing you already knew that so my apologies if too elementary.
I don't recall having other problems but I didn't spend too much time on it.
Nope never seen I3 before and just clicked on default and was clicking away on everything but the win key probs.
