hi, I also have a relatively modern Samsung monitor with vga and DVI input; the analog input is 1280x720 p60-- this monitor works well with the Pine Store hdmi-->vga adapter ( single piece self contained ).
More likedly than not, your pine board is booting but your monitor is not compatible. If you have a serial TTL usb bridge cable you can plug the cable into the EXP header and then plug the usb end into your mac or pc... you can then monitor the boot sequence to see where its hanging up.

You may also logon to the computer via the serial console cable. Also, you may logon to the computer via ssh.
