AOSP is not GPL-licensed. It is Apache-licensed. Theoretically. In practice, it is mostly useless without proprietary hardware driver blobs. The only really FOSS distributions of AOSP that I know of are GloDroid and Replicant. All the other "de-googled" AOSP derivatives use the exact same proprietary driver blobs the official Android build for the same device uses.
