It will probably boot up, but don't expect you can attach a whole bunch of devices, which need power from the device.

I wouldn't count on it. People who buy the device now are (more) expected to help make that a reality.
The board is very similar to the starfive viisionfive 2, to the extent that the pre-flashed firmware has a number of visionfive strings present in it.
I’ve successfully booted the visionfive 2 Debian image on the board, but Ethernet seems to have an odd issue where it refuses to dhcp, but will static assign an address fine. I’m assuming the Ethernet implementation is different enough to matter.
I haven’t tried the recently released Ubuntu for visionfive 2 yet. That may be on tap for the coming weekend, but I know that @Fishwaldo has put a lot of work into a yocto image built specifically for the star64: https://github.com/Fishwaldo/meta-pine64
