I noticed that in Settings > Display there are various settings such as resolution etc. that can be adjusted to make it work with VGA. I have tried to change some of them, but they seem to do nothing at all. I hope it isn't a bug of the O.S.

Yes, quite a lot of people have tried this. Short answer, some adapters work better than others.
