Okay, I had the exact same problem as your first description.
My solution was to downloade "Android PhoenixCard Image Release 20160216"

burn it with "Allwinner PheonixCard Bootable SD-Card Creato"

When I burned the image i followed this tutorial:

I did however get an error message (sorry, don't have a screenshot) but I tried to use the card in the pine anyway and it worked
I think the pine took 5 min or so to boot.
