i was on version #39 ,when updating to #41 , it would only reboot to the pine64 cone or the ubports update install icon.

Yea, testing things for stable. Right at this very moment you should also see very good performance but no crust and no GPS

This reinforces the need for an undo-feature. I am not using the Pinephone and UT as my daily drivers yet, but was still a bit annoyed that I had to do a fresh install, deleting all the settings and installations that I had applied over the past month.
Doing backups via Jumpdrive is not a solution as it involves juggling cards again.

Of course. But that's not to say that things can go wrong on Stable as well or that a user might do something that breaks his system. It would really be good to have a way to go back to the last working setup, undoing everything that happened since.
I presume the problem with #41 was not intentional and could have been fixed with #42?

Yes. Marius was working on the shader (which makes the UI feel sluggish), and finally solved it it seems but there was some breakage in the process

When updating to #41 , it would only reboot to the pine64 cone, and it did the same with #42
