ANNOUNCING *BETA* RELEASE OF RECALBOX FOR THE ROCK64
#61
Im wondering if the kodi this version includes also includes all media player tuning that comes as example with libreelec, as example on Libreelec they managed to play up to 4k media, and in mine i can see that 1080p media allmost dont move the CPUs wich translates to lower temperature than if the system does software video decoding...so...basically you include in this build proper hardware video acceleration in kodi? if you do, when are we going to get a new update since up to october on libreelec there where very solid patchs regarding video decoding and audio quality? (im guessing here that i cant update kodi (or any package) individually  but correct me if im wrong)

@Danielsan - the only true crashes I have seen so far are related to the board overheating. Do you have a heatsink? Have you monitored the cpu load and temperature? You might check the logs in /var/logs if you see a true crash. It's important to point out that if ES restarts, but the entire system doesn't restart, that's not a crash. That's actually a recovery feature I added when an emulator doesn't correctly release the SDL resources and you would have been stuck at a "no input" screen without the ES restart. But to be clear, that's not a crash.

@Trash_Can_Man - yes the included version of KODI Leia has full 4k playback enabled and tested Smile And you're correct that you cannot run any updates, recalbox is compiled from the buildroot toolchain without a package manager. The idea is that it comes with everything you need out of the box.

Sorry i forgot to ask, on libreelec i usually run a few dockers with services i need, ive read that some addons from libreelec also work on recalbox but not all, so, docker addon from libreelec works on recalbox? if so, when i switch to the games interface the docker service and related dockers arent stopper right?
I did my search but i only found info about runing recalbox on dockers, not docker on recalbox...

The "stock" version of recalbox actually ships with Kodi Krypton, our release is the only one with the Kodi Leia version, due to it still being in alpha/beta. So you won't really be able to look it up as for what it will and won't do. I encourage you to give it a try! As long as the addon supports Kodi v18 then you should be able to install it and use it.

Im using libreelec alpha that uses leia and the addon works fine there so i guess it should work fine on recalbox too, if need be i can setup libreelec repositories on recalbox assuming you dont use the same...im going to try in a few days, i just wanted to get a "maybe" instead of a "not a chance in hell" lol

Hi thanks for your reply, I thought that might be the overheating but I didn't have any system restarting just ES restarting but with very high frequency. My board has two very basics and passive heatsinks I hope this is enough to avoid issue on my board.

Can I install this in a running image of DietPi?

I see there's an image, but I've gone through a lot to get my backend services running, so I don't want to simple exchange images and rebuild the backend from scratch.

I was wondering if I could just run some setup script and have recalbox running as a always on front-end or as a command from the terminal. Retropie has a setup method for ubuntu and debian.

Nope, its a buildroot system - so unlike RetroPie its an entire OS in a sense.
You can find me on IRC, Discord and Twitter

I booted recalbox and lakka and got frequent freezes and crashes even while simply browsing the menus (probably due to overheating, even though I have heatsinks over the cpu and gpu chips).
Is this normal? I'm starting to think this board just can't handle these basic tasks, even though its hardware is superior than a raspberry pi.
For now it seems to handle a simple NAS and some webservices, but it's very disappointing to see all those promises crumble.

I have received similar reports from users without heatsinks. I have a new release coming today or tomorrow with a LOT of updates and much improved performance and the default overclock has been removed. That should resolve the instability. Users with a heatsink are greatly encouraged to turn up their over clock Wink
