Edit: You can also try switching out just the ADSP firmware as mentioned here. You are probably on 01.003, stock is 01.002. That's the closed source part which I think is more likely to be responsible for problems than the open source part of the custom firmware.

Could you try to change your Mobile Network Settings to "2G only"? After a modem restart / phone restart, I am usually able to send SMS via Chatty - but only that way (O2Germany Sim Card).

Yes, that works. I am with O2 Germany, too. 

But since I followed the steps described here I am permanently able to send messages.

sorry, I did not manage to follow @biktorgj 's instructions - I got stuck after the second step.

I'm not sure, but perhaps you need to enter fastboot mode first. You could try to do it like in the flashall script und just exchange the flashing commands. But you would probably be better off asking directly on the bug tracker of the Github repo.
Also take note of the troubleshooting doc which also explains how to enter fastboot mode.

adb server has to be started as root. You are issuing the commands as user.
If you use the flash script you have to use sudo. Otherwise it will fail, since there are sudo commands in there

That made it work. My problem appears to be solved, the modem only crashed once over the past two days.
