Ubuntu mate boot failure

I have to hold the power button down for longer time to reboot.

I have this error occasionally on my Ubuntu on eMMC  system too, powering off entirely before (re)booting seems to prevent it. I don't have a pinebook UART breakout cable handy right now to debug it further unfortunately.

Strangely I don't ever have this happen when I boot Ubuntu from an sd card.

Are you doing anything strange with your filesystems? My eMMC system is on a ZFS root so I wonder if that's contributing. The Manjaro team recently had a few patches to keep the wifi from crashing the machine during boot too (it needs to be powered on in a specific order), I wonder if that's related?

Boot = eMMC, rootfs = NVMe SSD (Toshiba OCZ RC100, 240 GB, m.2 2242).
I use my PBP a lot, the error occurs once or twice a week.

I am also getting this boot failure occasionally on my pbp running Ubuntu Mate from emmc
