how to import contacts from sim cards

Is there a way to do that with mobian? Or at least from vcf files.

  Librem 5 (finally) shipping
Posted by: marcih - 11-30-2020, 03:25 AM - Forum: General Discussion on PinePhone - Replies (38)

Purism's blog post and FAQ.

I'm very interested to see what state the software will be in, keeping in mind what a buggy mess Phosh on the Pinephone still is. Will any of you be plopping down almost a grand (or two!) for it? Comparisons between the Librem 5 and the Pinephone would be very interesting, especially considering their pricing, now that hardware for both has been "finalized" (I don't expect major revisions beyond 1.2 for the PP) and shipping.

Star [Updated] Let's see which applications are compatible with the PinePhone on Manjaro
Posted by: kern707 - 11-30-2020, 02:24 AM - Forum: Manjaro on PinePhone - Replies (8)

Hello everyone,

As a continuation to a reply I have made to this post https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?...212&page=2,
about how (or why?) we don't get any applications displayed in Software under the "Explore" tab.

It is still possible to search for applications using the search feature (Under "Explore", on the upper left side of the screen), I think no applications are listed by default because so many of them are not compatible with the PinePhone, or at least not known to be compatible.

What if we could randomly test applications that we like (or need), and see if they are compatible with the PinePhone on Manjaro or not.

Let's use the following scoring system:

0 = not compatible
1
partially compatible

2 = compatible

The test will contain important test cases  such as:

1. General UI scaling - does the UI (or at least the important parts of it) scale to work with the PinePhone's screen?
2. Functionality - does the application is fully (or partially?) functional on the PinePhone?
3. Performance - does the application perform well on the PinePhone? or maybe it is just too heavy and completely not built to be run on a mobile device?
4. Any other random tests you might like to do.

Then we can write here a reply, with our results which will contain the following information:
0. What version of Manjaro for PinePhone are you using, and with which phone shell (e.g. Phosh)
1. Application name

2. Short description (what is this app, what is it used for)
3. Your compatibility rating (using the system shown above, 0 being the worst scoring, 2 being the best)

4. Optionally a few small comments about how the app performed  in each test case, and possible tweaks to make it better in case it does not perform as expected on the device.

This process can help us achieve a few things:
1. We will document which applications can be installed and used on our PinePhone with Manjaro.
2. The Manjaro-arm team could later look into the list of compatible application, and decide if they are ready to start populating the "Explore" tab with those applications, so the "Explore" tab will no longer be empty by default.
3. We could use our test results, and contact the developers behind the application who got a scoring of being "partially compatible", and ask them if they care to tweak their application to make it compatible with linux-arm phones, potentially helping our inventory of compatible PinePhone applications to grow.

What do you guys think?

Changed pw in terminal to 'asd' can't log in at phone's home screen now
Posted by: LazyMechTech - 11-30-2020, 01:24 AM - Forum: General Discussion on PinePhone - Replies (4)

I should have thought that one through! Ooops!
So my question is about factory resetting. I noticed a 'reset' button on the inside with the battery and the switches, but powering off, press and holding, doesn't seem to reset it back to original with the 123456 pw. Is there a protocol I can follow somewhere I just haven't found? Anyone know?

  Infinite Loading Screen
Posted by: syrinx - 11-29-2020, 09:25 PM - Forum: SailfishOS on PinePhone - Replies (2)

When booting the latest sfos image, all I get is a black background with a blue loading animation. I can swipe to open the top menu and camera, but after closing those, it returns to the loading screen. I have tried restarting, flashing a fresh image and booting from 2 SD cards and internal storage. Any ideas?

Question 180 degree hinge modification
Posted by: cochraLOGICA - 11-29-2020, 08:29 PM - Forum: Pinebook Pro Tutorials - Replies (2)

Recently, i went through the process of disassembling and modifying my Pinebook Pro to have a 180 degree hinge, and i noted the lack of talk on a good guide here.

Tools
 - file (preferably small) or a dremel with a small tip that can cut metal (or equivalent alternative)
 - a set of small screwdrivers/bits, preferable if you have a set of electronics repair screwdriver bits
 - calipers, ruler, micrometer, anything that can measure on the millimeter scale. (optional but recommended)
 - marker (optional)

Step 1) So as to not be redundant, go to https://wiki.pine64.org/wiki/Pinebook_Pr...Reassembly and follow the steps to remove the back cover. Please note there is two lengths of screw, keep track of where they go.
Step 2) Take panel assembly apart from main body according to these instructions http://files.pine64.org/doc/pinebook/gui..._Guide.pdf
Step 3) take off these (https://imgur.com/uGA26y7) on both sides, put everything else in a safe spot
Step 3.5) separate the two parts of the hinge mechanism
Step 4) get your dremel/file or whatever else you are using, and take off 3 mm from, whatever depicted in https://imgur.com/4xxVE0w from each of the side's pieces
Major steps of getting it to 180 degrees are done, now to put it back together. IN REVERSE

one thing to note, the hinge piece that was not modified is the thing that actually limits it, and if you can grind that (on the right side) to 180 degrees, you can do the same thing, but it would require grinding around a circle, and not linear.

first mod guide please be nice. Smile

  Remote desktop, video playback issues
Posted by: Zebulon Walton - 11-29-2020, 08:03 PM - Forum: Mobian on PinePhone - Replies (13)

I have the 11/29 nightly build of Mobian running on my Manjaro Pinephone, booted from a micro-SD card. Overall it's quite stable and surprisingly the phone's voice and SMS functions basically "just worked" with a Tracfone SIM for the AT&T network.

I have ssh server running on it which is great for working from the command line, but it would be nice to also be able to have remote desktop working. On my Debian desktop and laptop systems I normally run x11vnc for this, but since Mobian is using Wayland I assume something else is needed. What's the best choice?

Also I'm noticing that video playback of mp4 files is very choppy. HD videos (1080p) just show a few frames per second. I downconverted some to 480p and those work better but are still far from smooth. To get smooth playback I need to go down to 240p - VHS quality. (Actually on the small Pinephone screen it doesn't look bad!) This happens both with the default video player and VLC. Are there any tweaks that can improve this, or is it just a matter of waiting for further development? (On a related topic, where are default programs like default video player set? I'd like to make VLC the default unless there's a reason not to.)

  New Clusterboard Setup
Posted by: wargfn - 11-29-2020, 07:21 PM - Forum: Clusterboard - Replies (5)

So I am trying to get a new clusterboard up and running and want to use an ATX power supply as the main power source.  So I got a EVGA 450 W3 power supply. Got the board installed into a ThermalTake Core V1 case. Power Supply is hooked up and no juice. Flicking the power supply to the on position give me nothing. Not even a hint that the fan on the PSU spun.

I am assuming that my issue now is that I need a J2 Power switch and short that to an ON position; however, I thought I would ask if anyone else is using a regular ATX Power supply  instead of a Pico one. I want to also use the Molex connections to power some fans in the case and some other converted electronics projects.

PSU Spec Sheet

My second question is, what J2 Custom Options have you guys been using to power on the ATX Power Supply as a Switch?

  Fedora 32 gcc or clang
Posted by: tydeman - 11-29-2020, 06:32 PM - Forum: Linux on Pinebook Pro - Replies (4)

I installed Fedora 32 KDE Plasma today (Nov 29, 2020) from the Pine website.
Used dnf to so some 424 updates and rebooted (so system was current).
Then tried to do:
  dnf install gcc
  dnf install clang
Both failed due to missing kernel headers being filtered out.

I am now doing an upgrade from Fedora 32 to 33 as per
  https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/qui...m-upgrade/
The 3172 actions are taking a while.  Once done, I will see if I can
install either gcc or clang C compilers.

This system is running on a 64 GB uSD card.

  Success!
Posted by: Zebulon Walton - 11-29-2020, 03:00 PM - Forum: General Discussion on PinePhone - Replies (4)

After replacing the screen that I managed to crack on my new Pinephone (an interesting experience), I finally installed a Tracfone SIM for the AT&T network and activated it using a pre-paid Tracfone card. OS is the latest nightly build of Mobian as of this writing.

After activating the SIM and rebooting I found that basic voice calling and SMS both worked immediately. Pretty impressive for alpha software! Voice quality is not the greatest but is usable and will no doubt improve with updates. (People on the other end say it sounds muffled but they can understand me.) Interestingly at first the phone connected via 3G, then it switched to 4G.

So in theory when I'm ready to use this as my daily driver, a SIM for my regular AT&T account should work. Thanks and a tip o' the hat to the Pinephone and Mobian teams! (And to the guys on the hardware board that helped me get through the screen replacement!)
