Hey everyone, I am pretty new to the pine phone and the programming of it. I have the mobian software on my Pine phone. How do I add apps to it? Thank You for any help.
Bugs I've found:
- Locking / blanking the screen crashes or freezes gnome-shell on wayland. Can't reproduce the issue with X11. (issue recently resolved: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/1536)
Intro
So far using Mobian on Pinephone UBPorts edition as my main driver has been a relief from the for-profit operating systems. Thank you so much for this push forward, it's making a difference and giving me a word-of-mouth ability to spread awareness to people that this is possible: to live without the for-profit tech giants entirely!
What works well for me in Mobian as a user with low-intermediate linux knowledge:
Phonecalls incoming and outgoing are reliable with correct amplification and quality to be acceptable to the non-linux person and to me as an everyday user
texts send and receive reliably
Software downloads and uninstalls with relative ease
voice recorder works
camera works, front and back
battery reads accurately
Things to Work Through/towards
General OS
When outside my usual data area, I'm unable to browse the web even though data is set accessible through cell signal. It would be important for reloading bus cards through web app, and other important lookups for logistics no matter the area
A lot of applications don't resize to the correct window resolution. Having this automatically fit the window would be helpful, especially for linking contacts from Evolution or Thunderbird which both have the non-native resolution concern
When turning off only Wifi in settings, Airplane Mode is activated and deactivates bluetooth, wifi and cellular data
When turning off Airplane Mode, bluetooth, wifi and cellular is reactivated all together
When the phone sits idle on the charger for more than 30 minutes (idk the exact time), the phone has a blinking blue light and doesn't have its screen open. Is it going into sleep or hibernate mode? I could open it once with a few presses to the power button, though I don't know enough about the feature to say any more.
Contacts, Phone & Messages Interaction
Importing .vcf or other contact file formats in default contacts app: Even though I imported key contacts one by one, Phone doesn't recognize numbers that don't have the exact data representation. (Example: +17731234567). I found this out after manually putting contacts in without the + sign and having all my family members and friends call me and text me while not knowing who they were half the time other than voice recognition lol
Messages receives an unknown number and on pressing the new message, it doesn't open the text
When on a phonecall, the software can't yet put the first call on "hold" and I would have to call back (I don't mind this tbh)
Comments, Suggestions and Ideas
Voice Recorder could automatically suggest the date and time as the name
Mastodon works really well on Tootle
The UBPorts gui is really human focused, hopefully that can be an option in later builds
If an application is added to Favorites, can it stay in the application window as well instead of moving entirely to the top?
Closing Notes
Mobian's almost there for my daily driver. The only things that I'd need as an everyday user are the Phone, messages, and contacts correctly recognizing each other, the data access working while out, and the window size correction of non-native applications
All in all, I'm really enjoying the work that's being put into Mobian and very appreciative and thankful for all the work! Very excited to see what's cooking up for our future of linux tech
I recently bought a PP comunity edition , and i've been trying out most of majors OS 'manjaro , mobian , Ubuntu Touch ,...) now come the turn of SAILFISH wich is for now the smoothest one but , i just encountered a probleme i did not on any of the other OS's the SIM card won't unlock .
It is detected allright as i'm prompted with the unlock sim card screen at phone's startup , if i enter a incorrect pin code on purpose it tells me "wrong pin" but as soon as i enter the correct one ... nothing happens i touch the tick symbol and nothing happens , so utimately i'm forced to ignore this step and i can use every other functions of my phone except the phone related ones (sic).
if i try to unlock it from the settings-->security--->SIM it doesn't work either .
I'm really enthusiatic about the pinephone ,and would really like to get android free , sailfish seem to offer a good balance between user experience/functionality so i'm kinda frustrated about the whole phone not working thing , if anyone coudl help me it would be much appreciated.
I updated my SD card via apt and all was well. It's running Mobian and the emmc is UB Touch. Rebooted the critter and all is dark. I can hear some noises in the tab if I put my ear to it, and can power it down so it is quiet, but when I power it up, no display and the keyboard doesn't light up anymore.
So I removed my SD card to use Touch and it also doesn't respond! That doesn't make sense.
So is there a procedure to restore the emmc to it's original settings, or at least to get Mobian working on the SD card again so I can use it once again?
I was thinking if we should put together a list of ways to connect to all your services on your pinephone and listing them here for others to see could we get this list put together?
web browsing: Firefox, chromium needs UI scale tweaks to see menu options also laggy
Reddit: web version but hounds you to install the app
Applications now fit the screen ...well putty does...so does wireshark...
The command is ran in terminal without sudo too...I did it via ssh and it took

Unrelated yet in the vicinity the solution is not intuitive, where are the docs or the source for such Manjaro mobile configuration settings/issues?
I am posting this thread to current owners of the Early Adopter Pinetab and potential future purchases about my experience with the quality of my Early Adopter Pinetab.
Background: I purchased my Pinetab with keyboard case directly from Pine64 in June, 2020 and it was delivered in September, 2020. Up until today, it worked well with no issues at all and was used around the house. There wasn't a lot of wear and tear (none really) and charging was performed appropriately with an appropriate charger.
Current Issue: After using the Pinetab last night, I powered it off and put it up on a dresser, as I normally do. When I woke up this morning, I went to power it up and noticed the display was cracked. My first thought was 'it didn't fall on the floor and nothing dropped on it, so how did it crack?'. Once I picked it up, I knew something was wrong with the tablet-the plastic casing had popped apart on several edges. I could also feel an extra thickness to the tablet-slight but noticeable.
Cause: I have never opened up the Pinetab, nor am I going to now, but my best guess would be a battery expansion of some sort that was severe enough to crack the display.
Why the PSA: Pinetab owners and potential purchases should know of this issue. Current Pinetab owners that have a similar issue are encouraged to report the issue to Pine64.
Hopeful Resolution: As of now, I have a useless piece of electronics. The innards may have some value, as might the keyboard, but to repair the Pinetab would probably be more than the original cost. Even though the cost of the tablet is relatively low, I think it is entirely reasonable to expect that the Pinetab would remain in a working condition for more than 2 months. So my hopeful resolution:
1. Pine64 asks to have the unit shipped back to Pine64 (at Pine64's cost) to determine the cause of the issue of casing swelling and display cracking. This would help Pine64 determine if there are supply chain issues in terms of quality.
2. Pine64 refunds my purchase price. Even though I know there is a 30 day guarantee, I think that a reasonable customer should expect a Pine64 product to work more than 2 months.
3. If there is a known issue or one is found upon inspection of my unit that Pine64 notify purchasers of the issue and the corrective actions that will be taken to correct it.
It may be that my unit is a one-off situation in quality, but that would be for Pine64 to determine based on the examination of my unit and also using their collective knowledge about other defective units.
