Downsides of the open-source modem firmware?
Posted by: alpineduck - 10-18-2022, 09:26 AM - Forum: PinePhone Software - Replies (4)

Hello,

I recently got myself a PinePhone and intend to use it as my everyday phone.

I learnt there is an alternative, open-source firmware available for the Quectel modem.
Are there any downsides of using it instead of the original firmware?

I read a lot about its benefits (improved security, lower operating temperature, etc.) but nothing about possible issues with it.
Is there something which is known to work better with the original firmware or am I basically loosing nothing by ditching it?

Thank you!

Was the Pine Phone Pro you got from DHL new?
Posted by: theForce - 10-18-2022, 06:30 AM - Forum: General Discussion of PinePhone Pro - Replies (3)

Hello. Although I ordered a new Pine Phone Pro that included Manjaro by default I received a Pine Phone Pro with a dead battery and no OS.

I wonder if anyone has tips on dealing with the distributor from Hong Kong that fulfilled my order?

Please no replies from people that have never had to return a phone to Pine Store.

Thanks

create backup of os on ppp Arch/Phosh
Posted by: fox95 - 10-18-2022, 02:47 AM - Forum: PinePhone Pro Software - Replies (2)

Is there a easy way to back up the emmc to the sd card that i installed in the phone?  and then be able to re flash this if the main os gets corrupted ?

im relatively decent in finding my way around ubuntu on pc's in VM's, but the arch system i installed on the phone is a bit different and making some mistakes in the file os seem a bit easy to do and break the os.

this possibly/probably has been asked before but im looking for someone who's done this and can give step by step advice on the process.  I'd like to back up my os while its' in good working order now so i can experiment and then easily reload it if need be.

thanks

  Calamares initialization failure
Posted by: GOOOFBALLL - 10-18-2022, 01:42 AM - Forum: Mobian on PinePhone - Replies (6)

I am having an odd issue.  When attempting to install the latest version clear back to 20220925 I have been getting an error calamares initialization failure.  I am presuming it states failure because all I can see is Fa.  the error states, "Mobian can not be installed.  Calamares was unable to load all of the configured modules.  This is a problem with the way Calamares is being used by the distribution.  The following modules could not be loaded:  mobile@mobile  mobile@mobile.
I have tried redownloading the file 4 times.  I swapped usb cables.  I can install version 20220327 and it will boot up. However nothing works on that version.  I try to update and get an error.  I go to use the curl -s https://repo.mobian.org/mobian.gpg | sudo tee /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/mobian.gpg but when I install curl it gives me a bunch of weird symbols.  At that point I reinstall the OS. cur I am attempting to install to the eMMC.  I have installed tow boot but I have also tried using jump drive.  I am really out of options and nobody has seemed to put up this issue.  If they have I am sorry I didn't see it.

  Audio Stuttering Issue
Posted by: SteveDog - 10-17-2022, 12:27 PM - Forum: PinePhone Pro Software - No Replies

I have been daily driving the PPP for just over a month and most of the issues I initially found have been resolved. However, the audio output when I play music seems to be a persistent issue. (I am running Manjaro-ARM with KDE Plasma Version 5.25.5) The EMMC was flashed with this, so its likely not a factory software issue.

The music is from an SD card and when played on other devices (including the PPP with certain restrictions -see below) works just fine.

Following this thread's advice, https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?...ephone+pro  , I chose to change the config file in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf  to have

Code:
realtime-priority = 9
This made no difference (at least that I noticed)
Another thread,  https://github.com/manjaro-pinephone/pho.../issues/18  ,suggested lowering the volume to 50%. This completely removed the stuttering issue, and I have been able to get away with practically no stuttering at 65%.

In short, I'm wondering if anyone has found a permanent solutions to this issue or if this could just be a power management issue from the hardware.
Thanks!

PineBook Pro - Did I buy the wrong computer?
Posted by: astral - 10-17-2022, 08:55 AM - Forum: General Discussion on Pinebook Pro - Replies (8)

I've been looking for a laptop to run linux on and the PBP kept popping up in my searches, it seamed like a good option. (im not a newbie to linux, im comfortable setting up different distros and running commands from terminal) I'm not however that comfortable rummaging through git hub compiling builds for every application i want to run.

I did understand that PBP is ARM based, i got that conceptually, i didn't realize the apparent challenges in support of common-ish apps. Basically I got this to use as a dedicated machine for my crypto needs. my first disappointment was seeing the lack of support for Ledger live, then zoom, skype, and chrome/brave. one after another seeing the workarounds and coding/compiling just is too overwhelming.

So to get to the point, am i missing something? is there a simple solution to this? I dont think installing a different distro then manjaro would make a difference right? if im barking up the wrong tree i would really appreciate someone saving me the time and telling me i need to just get an intel or amd based computer.

I love the look/feel of the PBP btw i feel a ting of sadness of it not being a solution for me, but im a traveler and dont want to lug this around just because its cool for programming.

Really appreciate any advice.

Screen seems ok but no display
Posted by: UncleMeat - 10-17-2022, 08:35 AM - Forum: General Discussion on PinePhone - Replies (3)

Hello everybody!

I received my new PinePhone last week. It's running the Manjaro OS from factory and since a few days, I have no display. The screen seems to work, the phone is responding to ssh and I can connect an external screen, it's working okay but the phone's screen stays black-ish.
What can I do?
