What memory to buy fo Pine64 LTS
Posted by: kalid0r - 10-31-2017, 03:50 AM - Forum: General Discussion on PINE A64-LTS / SOPINE - Replies (2)

Hi All,

First time poster here but have been lurking for a while.

I have just taken delivery of two Pine 64 LTS 2GB boards and I have a question. What memory do I need to buy for them? My plan is to install android and I want as much performance as possible.

I had hoped it would become obvious once I saw the hardware but I am still uncertain so any advice would be depreciated.

Thanks!

Jon

  Strange situation
Posted by: mcrognale - 10-30-2017, 08:38 PM - Forum: General Discussion on ROCK64 - Replies (5)

Rock64 4GB with 64GB eMMC video out HDMI to a 32 inch monitor. OS is Ubuntu Debian Mate booting from the eMMC.  If I leave the system running the video output shuts down after about 15 minutes or so. If I press any key the video comes right back and the mouse operates but the system is frozen. Mouse clicks do not work on anything. Can't issue shut down. Can't bring up Firefox or any application. Nothing works. I have to power off then re-connect the power boot it back up to the desktop then do a normal shutdown. Not sure how this is happening or why. Anyone got an idea or solution?
Thanks,
Mike

  Rock64 as HTPC
Posted by: putyourlitterhere - 10-29-2017, 03:59 PM - Forum: General Discussion on ROCK64 - Replies (5)

Hi,

i bought myself the rock64 to use it as a HTPC. Currently I have not yet found the optimal solution. Basically there is not much I wish to achieve:
- Use Netflix (720p would be ok)
- Stream Webradios and Youtube
- Stream some German TV stations over internet (either app or in browser)
- Stream video/photos from my NAS
- Daily-use-compatible power button

Here are the problems I discovered so far:

Android TV:
- works basically but not much apps installable
- netflix not listed in playstore
- Tried an apk for netflix for android I found on some websites. They get installed but when I open I receive an error message: "your device not compatible... blabla"
- I can install "normal" netflix app as an apk file. That can also stream video, but as soon as the navigation bar disappears I can not bring it back. I can not pause the stream or jump to any position because the navigation bar does not reappear.

LibreElec:
Installs fine, works good but the current available Version (krypton) does not yet support Netflix. Raybuntus repository (https://github.com/Raybuntu/LibreELEC.tv/releases/) holds releases with the next version (leia) but they are not yet available for rock64.

Ubuntu Mate:
Installs fine, works good, but chrome is not available for the platform and Firefox is not supported for Netflix on this platform ==> no netflix streaming

Android stock:
Installs fine, works but input with mouse/keyboard sometimes is difficult. But I could live with that.
Again: Netflix is not available on playstore but can be installed from apk. But I get the same problem as described in section Android TV. Navigation bar disappears...

Power button:
I think the way to go here is to add a switch of my choice with some extra cable to the same pins as the current power button. As I'm not an electronic engineer I fear the soldering of these tiny pins. Is there any other way to go?

Which setup do you guys use? Have you encountered the same or further issues? Is there a way to fix the issues described above?

Looking forward to your replies.

Exclamation No Boot (Still)
Posted by: odatkid - 10-29-2017, 11:12 AM - Forum: Getting Started - Replies (7)

Hi all,
I'm stuck and would appreciate some help. I'm trying to install some version of Android (I think I tried most of them for this board). Repeatedly flashed the original board (2gb ram, LCD screen) and still nothing.
I've also checked HDMI and Nada. I thought the problem might be the LCD connections but everything looks good to me. I undid and reassembled the board and LCD. On the next install attempt the screen flashed bright white every 15 seconds or so (which I found encouraging) but still no boot.
Since then I've re-flashed without success. On some of the installs the red LED power light blinks and on some it stays solid Huh .

Any help is appreciated,
 Thank you......Tom

  Volumio on Rock64
Posted by: gkkpch - 10-29-2017, 10:12 AM - Forum: Linux on Rock64 - Replies (20)

Hi,

Due to lots of other activities I have not been able to work on Rock64 changes as much as I hoped.
Therefore it has taken far longer than anticipated, but here it is.
I'm pleased to publish a link to the first Volumio dev image for Rock64.
Volumio 2.299 for Rock64

This image will boot from eMMC and uSD out-of-the-box.
Support for the Rock64 DAC board is included, SPDIF and DAC are both working.
Limitations are:
- it is WIP and therefore a dev version, no opportunity to update to a newer release (reflash will be necessary)
- not all audio formats are working, due to current kernel driver/codec constraints

I'm convinced Rock64 has great potential.
Note: you can purchase a 1Gb Rock64 board version, it will be enough to run Volumio comfortably.

Please report any issues here.

How do you guye s charge your PB
Posted by: machinehum - 10-28-2017, 11:43 AM - Forum: Pinebook Hardware and Accessories - Replies (2)

Right now I'm using a 2A wall wort + USB to barrel connector. I really like this configuration because I can use the wall wort to charge my phone + eReader as well, so I don't have to carry around multiple chargers.

But it seems that when I'm using the PB it doesn't actually charge. Based on the battery capacity and lifetime of the PB I can't imagine it used more than ~1A, so it should be able to shunt current into the battery during use no?

Is there a little script or app that I can use to view power consumption / charge current etc... ?

  Warranty, replacement, repair?
Posted by: matwey - 10-28-2017, 09:15 AM - Forum: Rock64 Hardware and Accessories - Replies (2)

Hi,

I've recently bought the couple of 4GB Rock64. One of them is not booting up.
When I plug the power, the green led starts to blink with approx. 10Hz rate, RK805-1 begins to heat and smell. I am afraid the problem is in RK805-1.

Unfortunately, RK805-1 parts seem to be unavailable on free market. I would have just replace the one and see what had happened.

Has anybody ever see the same? Is there any option except throw the device out?

Attached here are power supply and the board itself.

  Gigabit Ethernet problems
Posted by: aaronw - 10-27-2017, 10:17 PM - Forum: Linux on Rock64 - Replies (2)

Hi all,

I have my Rock64 plugged into a gigabit switch along with my host computer. After adding the fix for the USB power problem I ran into an issue where ssh would frequently hang and I could not even run vi or remote X  tools. Even aptitude would hang when I attempted to search.

Anyway, I was able to fix the problem by installing ethtool and running ethtool eth0 -s advertise 0x008

This forces the board to only use 100Mbps instead of gigabit. My guess is that there may be something misconfigured in the MAC or PHY driver for this board, preventing large data transfers over gigabit (perhaps inter-packet spacing or something like that is wrong).
