So I have read, but it doesn't look or feel like it to me.
I dislike the default skin MATE comes with and use an older one. Have you tried finding a different theme?
No I have not yet, I am still mostly OEM Debian/Mate on this ISO PBP
I don't really have a strong dislike for the Mate Desktop, But over the years I have used Gnome
on every version of Linux that I have kept installed, it just feels like 'Home'
I have tried a few different Desktops occasions.
I did even install Debian/Mate on one of my old spare Dell laptops, just to compare with my PBP.
(My new ANSI PBP is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow)
Mine too, the first I'd heard about it was that it's in NYC which is about 120 miles. That email came at 4:30 AM on the day before it's due to be delivered. Ordered Nov 8.
Given that I consider Gnome to be serious bloatware I'll just go into Synaptic and load up LXDE. Ubuntu I wouldn't live with. The Debian alternatives system can possibly switch desktops back and forth. But boot to a command line, on everything.
I wonder if the Mate is Wayland? That would be worth experimenting with, given that with some Mali GPUs there's only an accelerated driver for Wayland. If you boot to a command line you can start xorg or Wayland from there.
XFCE might be Waylnd capable, but unstable on 4.16, in 2-3 years.
Gnome is the only Wayland stable. The KDE wayland bugs list is still long and we might have it stable by the end of this year.
