Please forgive my n00bn3ss, this is new territory for me.

Please try out anarsoul mainline arch linux build which may able to support other displayresolution than typical HDMI standard one (720p or 1080p).
Here is the link: https://github.com/anarsoul/linux-build/releases/

I must apologise, I neglected to note that this was the Pine64 forum (I'm using a Rock64) - is this build of the same modernity with that platform? I'm keen to try it out if it offers some options.

I tried the Arch distro and I can confirm that 1366x768 is supported just fine ... would that implies it's not a hw issue and a little massaging would allow it on Ubuntu Mate ?
That would be great to add a little more flexibility !! Thanks anyhow for the hard work. Lorenzo

Anarsoul's Arch distro is mainline Linux which can support wider range of resolution and also dual display (LCD + HDMI). The Ubuntu Mate using BSP Linux and only support 720P and 1080P output on HDMI port. In near future, developer plan to update Ubuntu Mate to mainline Linux.

It seems that no matter what I do that with 1080p the top, bottom and sides always get cut off with overscan.

I found the problem. It doesn't like monitors that do 1920x1200.
