Long-sleep image vs Pine64 image
#1
Hi,

My Pine just arrived and I am excited to get up and running. As I perusing the Wiki, I noticed that the Pine64 folks have posted the Ubuntu image linked below. Their image is based on @longsleep's, and I have three questions about this.

#1 Do we know if the Pine image is based on the newest Longsleep release?
#2 Is the Pine64 image different from Longsleep's outside of the obvious package differences?
#3 Is there any else I should consider before choosing one image over the other?

Thank you!

to answer that question I must state the obvious.

The 8gb file download is certainly not longsleep's handy work. His images are base ubuntu core and are less than 200mb in size. Some of the images being downloaded are a bit out dated even my debian builds and longsleep's builds. At this point I would liek to say how everything is tied into longsleep's work as he was th efirst to get a working Kernel with all the functional bits (ethernet, wireless, hdmi etc etc). In essence everything is driven by his kernel/uboot build (simpleimage and scripts).

The best place to get longsleep's stuff is either direct or from pine64.pro as it keeps the latest images up for download and regularly checks for functionality.

keep in mind that this will soon be rectified as myself and others are working on a system to keep only the freshest and thoroughly tested images up on the wiki and official pine sites Wink.

  1. Will be answered if you execute the scripts from the next link. It's a shame that it's not outlined in the wiki that these scripts are essential.
  2. Yes, it's different (bloated and manipulated) and should be avoided, reasons here: http://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?t...47#pid8547
  3. The problem with the manipulated OS images is that they ALL introduce more bugs and that they lack documentation. Most probably to trick backers into believing Linux support would be close to final (which is not, read through the honest announcement for longsleep's original Xenial image what you can expect NOW)

You can add an desktop environment of your choice to the original longsleep Xenial image and by adopting patches made for OpenELEC/H3 with longsleep's kernel and a new tool also dynamic display resolution switching will work soon.

Hi,

Thank you both for your response. I have already downloaded and installed Longsleeps Ubuntu instance from here: https://www.stdin.xyz/downloads/people/l...es/ubuntu/

Given both of your feedback, it sounds like that is the right option. I had wondered with the Pine version was somehow better or at least more complete from a package standpoint. Clearly that is not true.

Wish me luck as I am testing all this out today!

Thank you,
