Regular Android build for Rock64?
#1
Question
Dear Pine64 team! Why don't you make a regular Android build for Rock64? The TV UI in the stock OS is almost unusable with touchscreens. No navbar and status bar so it is very inconvenient to connect to network or adjust the volume. I just don't get it. Are there any TECHNICAL limitations for rk3328 for making a regular android os? Rock64 is a really great product and has a great hardware but the software side is a lot of pain

There is no technical limitation. The ROCK64 using TV UI due to the primary video output is connected to TV.

So the question is if there are any plans to release a regular version of Android for this board?

Probably not by the Rock team. I've been waiting patiently for this since I got my Rock64. It hasn't happened, so I doubt it'll happen now. The ROCKPro64 is supposed to be getting a stock version of Android, so perhaps you might want to update to that board? It also has the benefit of long-term support, something that the Rock64 doesn't have and as such will probably be dropped from development soon enough.

The current "Stock" version of Android for the ROCKPro64 does not have Play Services/Play Store yet though.

I'm debating getting one of these. For now, my Rock64 suits my needs just fine though.

I don't believe the Rock64 Development will be totally dropped as LibreELEC OS is being actively tested and developed with Rockchip employees participating. Android and Android TV Development is probably an unknown. Depending on your needs, the RockPro may be overkill when making a purchase decision. I've been using Ayufans' Android TV on my Rock64 eMMC and LibreELEC via SD Card Boot. Suits my needs.

I meant official development by the Rock64 team. I figure third-party development will stick around for a while after the team drops development.

I start to think that for my purpose of making a car entertainment system buying a Rock64 was a huge mistake and a waste of money. Though it has a pretty good specs, it doesn't have any OS which would work well with touchscreen

I feel the exact same way. I spent over $150 on the R64 and a bunch of accessories ,for essentially nothing. it sits in a drawer and about once a month I pop in hoping for a miracle.

I have both Rock64 and Firefly roc-rk3328-cc.

I don't like Android TV UI on Rock64,  Android regular UI Firefly roc-rk3328-cc looks good.  But no way to put SuperSU on Android for Firefly roc-rk3328-cc (it is rooted).  No Google Play Store on Firefly roc-rk3328-cc.  Applications used to start an service such as "Auto Start" or "Autostart and Stay!" cannot start the service at boot.

I feel so weird about  Android 7.1.2 on roc-rk3328-cc.   but it is still usable to get and install all apps from APKPure.com

USB3 can only be used with Thumb Drives , but not stable with hard drive for Android 7.1.2 on both Rock64 and Firefly roc-rk3328-cc

For Linux, USB3.0 are stable for both boards: Rock64 and Firefly roc-rk3328-cc.
