Hi,

I have followed the link and installed the latest version (xenial-pine64-bspkernel-20160507-1.img.xz ). I managed to expand the partition to my full sd card and install MATE.

I have managed as well to start in xwindow mode but the system goes really slow and gets frozen sometimes for some seconds.

I was wondering how is the performance in your experience and if you have any idea why mine is not so good.

Another issue that I am facing is that the edges of the screen are hidden on my monitor and can't see the menu bar.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

The menu issue may have to do with your monitor.  I had the same problem and found here in the forum that the problem may be to the "Overscan" setting.  Sure enough, I had this and it was on.  Once, I turned it off, it fixed everything.  I would check that first.

On your first question about performance, I found it a bit slow for me too.  I assumed that that was the norm but could be wrong.  Truthfully, I am more focused on a headless use case and so am not really focused on Mate desktop performance.

Do the following to confirm the usual problem when one combines a SD card with slow random write performance and a Desktop Linux or Android:

Code:
sudo apt-get install iozone3
iozone -e -I -a -s 100M -r 4k -r 16k -r 512k -r 1024k -r 16384k -i 0 -i 1 -i 2

And for a better understanding what's going on/wrong just look through the specific thread: http://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=191&pid=9042

What browser are you all using?  Chromium doesn't seem to be in the repositories and firefox crashes... I can use midori (however, I've never really cared fore midori...), and it complains when I just try to use an armhf version of chromium or firefox... did you need to add in some 32 bit arm stuff?

I am using Midori which works.  However, I really want to use Firefox and the one included is unstable.  I have the same issue with the armhf version.  I have the .deb package but it refuses to install saying "wrong architecture."

Tkaiser,

Many thanks for the info, very useful!

My Kingston card has indeed an appalling random write rate 212kb/s. I have now tried a old SanDisk I had laying around and random writes at 567kb/s. Much better but far from the 3Mb/s that the Evo+ is supposed to give you so I think I will get myself a 64Gb Evo+ which are not too expensive at the moment.

I am using a Windows Desktop, so the steps covered here will show that.

Pre-Install setup

  1. Download the latest image from longsleeps folder (https://www.stdin.xyz/downloads/people/l...es/ubuntu/)
  2. Download Win32Imager (https://sourceforge.net/projects/win32di...t/download)
  3. Have some kind of extraction capabilities (May i suggest 7zip - http://www.7-zip.org)
  4. Have a Micro SD card (and adapter to enable it to plug into a USB port) ready, at least 8GB (Class 10 if you can)
  5. Have a decent power supply (at least 2a) and shorter cables are better.
Note: Some other images that I’ve tested with (Android and RemixOS) require Phoenix Card to write the image, which isn’t covered here. Please see the other forum/wiki posts.

Setup

  1. Extract the image, and Install the Win32Imager somewhere (preferably the same folder!)
  2. Open Win32imager and write the image to the SD card (ensure you have the SD card selected!)
  3. Once the write has completed, MAKE SURE you safely remove the USB drive from the PC – not doing so may harm the write process.
  4. Remove the SD card and put in the Pine64. Ensure you only have the REQUIRED peripherals connected, Keyboard, HDMI, and I would say LAN too, THEN connect the power.
  5. Let the Pine64 boot. When completed, use username: ubuntu and password: ubuntu to login; it’s also worth mentioning that once you see the login screen, you CAN ssh into the pine64 also, if you so prefer.
  6. Once logged in, run the following:  /usr/local/sbin/resize_rootfs.sh
this will resize the / partition to fill the SD card.
  7. Profit!
Congratulations, you should now have a working system.
From here you can install MATE (for a desktop) or carry on in term mode and get using.
I would change the default password asap, and secure it with a ssh key.

If this is helpful to anyone, please let me know.
I may have a look at doing a video tomorrow if I get time, showing the steps above - if that would be helpful to anyone.

Cheers
dm

Thanks this at least got me to the point of where I had a terminal. But I have no idea how to load MATE or anything else after that lol NOOBE

Hi outkast,

No worries, maybe I should add that!

There's a script in the /usr/local/sbin folder called install_mate_desktop.sh - run that and it will download all the required for the desktop environment.

to run it try /usr/local/sbin/install_mate_desktop.sh (you may have to use sudo)

How long should mate install take?  Mine is running on a couple hours now and still unpacking things.  Is this uncommon, and if so, how do I stop it and start over as painlessly as possible?

It does take a while. A better way to do it is to install "screen" first. You can then start a screen session and run the install routine and then leave it running while you do other things.

I am not sure if there is a clean way to stop it. I think that ctrl-c will work, but it will not be a clean exit.
