I have a pinephone, and I noticed it gets warm. Maybe future pinephones could have heatpipes/vapor chamber or something. That's what I did to my Pinebook pro. I opened it and put a heatpipe in there, with thermal paste.
It depends upon what OS you are running and what you are doing with it. With that said, my Iphone got hot as well during different tasks.
I’m just thankful that we have a viable open source alternative to the major data harvesting brands.

Just because I can, I managed to put a piece of copper in there for slightly better temperatures. I made sure there was thermal pads between the board and the copper, so I don't short circuit it. It still works. Also, it is true that it's better for software to improve than chucking in a heatsink. Since more optimized software helps with better battery as well, is more able for cooling.
