(ARCHIVED) Ubuntu Xenial Image (BSP Kernel)
I just checked, and the enclosure for the drive I'm trying to use is USB3.0. I wonder if that's part of the problem. When I have some time later tonight I'll disconnect the USB2.0 drive from my Pi and connect it to the Pine to see if it works any better.
thanks mate Smile

Tried connecting the USB2.0 drive through the USB hub I'd been using, and the Pine didn't register it was connected.  Connected it directly to the Pine and it read it just fine.  Only problem is the drive has one of those extra USB power plugs and it only worked with both plugged in.  The USB hub isn't the one I plan to use when I build my portable file server, so hopefully I can find one that will work better.  I'm guessing it just doesn't have enough power output, even though it's a powered hub.

Tried my USB3.0 enclosure with the cable from the USB2.0 drive, and it works with both data and power cables attached to the Pine, but not with the extra power cable unplugged.  It also does not work when attached to the USB hub.

Moral of the story is: Just because a USB hub has a power adapter doesn't mean it puts out enough power to actually provide power for peripherals.  When the hub looks like the TARDIS and has lights and sounds, the power adapter is much more likely to be powering those extras than the devices attached.  I'll be shopping for a new powered USB hub in the very near future.
I just uploaded a new Ubuntu Xenial image which includes the latest Kernel which includes resolution changing and additional modules for USB wifi. You really should start with this image.

Get 20160507-1 from https://www.stdin.xyz/downloads/people/l...es/ubuntu/

As always, for a list of changes and full details see the first post in this thread.
Would it work on a 1440x900 display through HDMI VGA converter? Which desktop environment do you recommend? I would need dummy instructions to get into it...
No clue - try it? You also find a script to install Mate desktop in /usr/local/sbin - try that too.

Your work is awesome but I'm not able to fit the output to my display. This is the best I can get:

Well, thats called overscan/underscan and needs to be modified in the setting of your screen.

Btw, you should not change the resolution when X is running. See https://github.com/longsleep/sunxi-disp-tool#usage

Your are right, I'll try on the right way. Should I kill Xorg from a second tty? Thanks for your patience [emoji1]

Another thing I've noticed, it does not matter Wath I configure on /boot/uEnv.txt, the display is always shown as seen.
I'm using longsleep's latest image with HDMI to VGA adapter connected to my 2GB PineA64+ and have it working fine.

-I attached USB to TTL adapter to my Pine's UART and had the VGA cable, coming out of the HDMI to VGA adapter, to an old 1280x1024 LCD monitor.
-On first boot I accessed the Pine through serial console, logged in, ran "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade".
-After that completed I executed the command "sudo sunxi-disp-tool switch -name 720p60", the display came on the monitor, although stretched from top to bottom since the monitor is 1280x1024 rather that 1280x720. I did an "Auto Adjustment" on my monitor to get rid of over-scan, but image is still stretched top to bottom but very usable for testing.
-Also happy to notice that USB WiFi support is included in the latest longsleep build, just execute "sudo apt-get install linux-firmware" to install many of the available WiFi adapter firmware. Tested with a RT5370 based WiFi adapter.
-I also installed Mate desktop with lightdm successfully on my Pine, "sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment-extras lightdm" is the command I used to install the necessary packages.

Much thanks longsleep! Smile
Currently playing around with Arduinos, CHIPs, Orange Pis, PineA64s, Raspberry Pis, etc.
