Rock64 second NIC
#1
Is there a way to install a second Gb network interface and making it a POE connection for supplying power to the Pine64 without utilizing a USB port?

This device is too big and a mickey mouse solution.

Looking at the possibility of turning the Pine64 in to maybe a mini PFSense firewall running BSD?

Couldn't you use a USB 3.0 -> GbE dongle ? that would make for pretty quick second networking. As for BSD we'll have to wait and see Smile

Thank you Luke.

Yes looked here at Amazon for a USB 3.0 NIC and they have an Amazon Basics one for around $13.99 USD.

I was thinking in terms of a larger case for the Rock64 with the two NICs built right in with POE.

For time bean will probably go with the USB 3.0 NIC running Linux instead of BSD.

Just noticed this in the specifications:

Expansion Ports
  • 2x20 pins "Pi2" GPIO Header
  • 2x11 pins "Pi P5+" GPIO Header (with 2nd 10/100Mbps Ethernet pins)

a 2nd 10/100Mbps Ethernet connection would do fine with POE.

The Rock64 would be running alarm panel management software in Ubuntu.

Just found this...

The RK3328 internal PHY for the 10|100 ethernet link requires additional hardware to function.  While this is obvious to many of our number, it may not be clear to all of you, including me.

The 10|100 ethernet connection requires not only the internal PHY on the RK3328 chip, but also requires what is called a "magjack"  (the RJ45 connector jack)  which includes a fairly sophisticated isolation transformer "inside" the jack housing !  The magjack is relatively inexpensive and may be obtained from various sources;  the Pine store carries a DAC board for the Rock64 which contains a correct magjack, so if you will be using the DAC the magjack tails along for the ride!

Currently (for a while now) been playing with micro travel routers tinker toys running OpenWRT with exposed GPIO ports and such. (LUA works) Not really much to them relating to CPU / working memory though.

The testing microrouter is inside of an alarm panel which provides VPN access to the alarm.  (via wireless, wired or cellular) and communicates to the alarm panel via the NIC or serially via a USB port.
