LINUX Distribution for the newbie

greetings,

I am a complete novice in computing_and for the longest time I detested the linux way of doing things by typing (no offence meant). Now I do want to learn both linux & the arm processors. I would like to start on an accessible distribution that will allow me to do my c programming & compilation, if I ever get even that far.

There is no reason to spend any time to answer this rudimentary question--I did try to find answers to no avail, if anybody could drop a hint I would be greateful.

Hi

I think that you may want to start with the base image of ubuntu. I would suggest you don't give in to the urge to install a desktop environment at first and just have fun becoming familiar with the CLI (command line). There are many good introductory series on youtube. That said, you can install a desktop environment called Mate running this command:

sudo /usr/local/sbin/install_mate_desktop.sh

It may take a long time to install (dependently on your internet connection speed). 


This is just one of the choices you are given - you can find most of the available OS' images here.

I could delete it or lock it, but I really see no point in doing so unless you insists. Perhaps you'll have further questions or someone else other opinions to offer .... you never know. I suggest we leave it as is.

I too am a newb and ive tried nearly every image, and by far have had the best luck with opensuse, I made a mini howto in the newbie area.
