Ubunu not working anymore
#1
Hello!

I have installed the Ubuntu release a long time ago on my Pine, and everything worked fine. Main use was with an DVB-C stick and tvheadend as a Videoecorder.

I updated the Ubuntu software regularly and the system worked fine.

With the last updated Ubuntu told me to reboot the system, and from that moment on, startup did not complete.

I get an error "[VFE_ERR]Error registering ve412 subdevice No such device!" and "[VFE_ERR]vfe_register check error at input_num = 0 " (and later 1).

My Pine is connected via eth0 - and as I said before this configuration worked for a very long time..."

Help plz!

Thanks!

hi, my response is meant in a friendly spirit of goodwill, and not as a rebuke.

... there are some rules about update and upgrade that must be followed with SBC SoC boards; and I do mean all of them.

1) never update or upgrade unless you have been advised to for a purpose , and then only if there is a 'need'

2) read rule (1) again , and follow it religiously.

3) before updating & upgrading , backup your SD card data , then backup the SD card itself.

4) if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

4b)  or, if it ain't broke, fix it until it is.....   Tongue

The 'weak link' or achilles heel of the PineA64 board ( or the Raspberry PI too ) is the SD card. Its the slow component, its the corruptible component, and its most easily lost.  It is very important to have your SD card backed up for just this situation (and others).

Often, longsleep will be able to tell you what you need to do to fix the card, so don't chuck it.  On the other hand, it is almost always easier and less hassel in the long run to flash a new card and keep smiling... um, computing.

That error does not prevent boot.

Thanks for the reply guys.

@MarkHaysHarris777: well actually I did the upgrade - and as my PINE is connected to the internet I don't think that NOT installing OS updates at all is not a very good option for security reasons.

@longsleep: to be mor exact: U usually connect to the pine64 using ssh and I can't do that because no ports are open on the PINE. Last thing I see at the boot screen is "Press Enter for maintenance or "press Control-D to continue". If I press control+D it says "sulogin cannot read /dev/tty1 permission denied", and after a while I get "Press Enter for maintenance (or press Control-D to continue):" again.

If I press enter I get a root command prompt, still no ports open....

Well most likely the filesystem is broken. Best try to fix it with another Linux PC.

This may or may not be relevant, but I've seen the Press Enter for Maintenance prompt before as well, and got nervous. After a very long time (~30 minutes- give or take) the system did boot on it's own. In my case, it happened when CIFS shares and an external HD listed in /etc/fstab were not available. Do you have any file systems that Ubuntu might be searching for?

Well, checking the filesystem on another linux system didn't lead to a solution.

googled for VFE_ERR and found out that it comes from a "sunxi Camera Interface driver" - I'm pretty sure I would'nt need that because I have no cam installed - so is there a chance to remove this driver?

On the other linux system did you mount the SD card and run fsck on both partitions... but especially the mmcblk0p2 ?

Just rechecked both partitions - both are allright according to fsck.

Still, the issue remains an I'm not able to use my PINE with ubuntu.

Another question: i can't find a boot.log on the system...

Thanks again for any help

Here my dmesg - output. Hope that helps:
