Anyone tried Signal Desktop

It works, sluggish like everything else on the pinephone, but at least its working.

Calls over signal have about a 1.5 second delay, but text and pictures are working and thats mainly what I need it for.

The latest 5.17 installs and starts up, but never gets past the initial loading icon (I'm running mobian bookworm). I can't find older .deb packages and I'm not skilled with building from scratch. Would you happen to have the old .deb?

What you need to do is click on the dropdown menu thing that shows "Master" and go to "Tags" and it will show the other version of the releases. Below is a 5.16 release.

For what it's worth, I haven't been able to get mine to sync with Axolotl so don't get your hopes too high. I've tried 5 times or so to get it to work but it just hasn't. If you do get it to work let me know though!

Can binaries from https://omniteck.com/ be trusted? omniteck is a "security researcher" that does not seem to be active on any pine forum or chat community. People can't post issues on his github. No reproducible verifiable build. You can not prove your compiled binary from his source is the same one on github. What good is a self signed deb if the author can't be trusted? Long time community contributor undef1 also releases signal-desktop builds and is active in the community. https://gitlab.com/undef1/signal-desktop...-/packages with out the theater of a self signed deb. Signal has added Apple M1 ARM support in v5.27.1. https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Desktop/releases The community should push the signal foundation to release an official ARM64 deb.

Omniteck used to publish the corresponding scripts with the deb file but I've stopped considering it a viable option as soon as only deb files were being published. It's sketchy enough using a third-party to install Signal, let alone one that doesn't allow you to see the build process.

omnitek could be a good guy. Our community should not discourage contributors. He would probably welcome help to make his work more trustworthy. We should not offend contributors to our small community. Aren't his scripts still published? https://github.com/0mniteck/Signal-Desktop-Builder

Did you use the bullseye tar? Does beta mean undef1 repo follows the signal-desktop's beta releases?

At the point I last reviewed the project, it appeared to be missing some source (It looks like it has since been updated?) that I thought should have been included. Considering that users expect Signal to be secure and without prying eyes, obscuring any part of the project (whether intentionally or accidentally) is a reasonable and valid criticism. I don't intend to put down the author for their contributions.

Re: undef's repo. I'm running bookworm so I used the non-bullseye release. undef appears to follow a similar release pattern to Signal. Hopefully they release a stable version soon (since they've only released beta releases so far).

Is this build based on  https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Desk...8.0-beta.1 ?    If you click Help   then About Signal Desktop  does it say production or beta?

Appologies for resurfacing this "old" thread, but I was looking into this issue again to see if the Signal Foundation has made any progress.
As I had an open feature request on their Community page since August 2019 (https://community.signalusers.org/t/sign...64/9001/34).
And the only "trustworthy" source for a Signal Client outside the Foundation I think is the one released by Dennis Ameling (https://github.com/dennisameling/Signal-Desktop) as he works closely with the developers of the Foundation and has their blessing and his stuff gets merged into the official repos too.
Only downside for now is that he only works on the Desktop Client.

Using github ( https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Desktop/issues/3410 ) will reach more developers than the community forum. A proof of concept arm64 debian build from dennisameling was released https://github.com/dennisameling/Signal-...-arm64-poc . Newer dennisameling builds are for arm64 windows only.

The lack of Signal, is the reason i have "binned" my PP , and bought an iPhone

Too bad ... I had hoped for an alternative to Android/IOS

Axolotl exists which is a signal client that works for the Pinephone.
