Anyone tried Signal Desktop - ragreenburg - 08-30-2021

Someone sent me this link when I mentioned Axolotl wasn't working and claimed this works but I certainly wasn't able to get the debian package to install and can't open an issue on their Github because it is restricted. Anyone else have any luck?

i haven't tried signal-desktop (for pinephone) or axolotl (for any). there is crucial difference between these programs. axolotl is primary device program, it means it is installed one device only which functions as primary device, usually smartphone. signal-desktop is secondary device program, it means it requires connection to the primary device program (through cloud).

in my knowledge, signal-desktop is not optimized for smartphone u.i.. generally speaking bad idea for pinephone, even one wants secondary device program.

however, for me, signal-dekstop works fine for my x86-64 laptop debian unstable though.

I understand that it isn't really built for the pinephone but right now Axolotl isn't working and hasn't been working for a few days so there isn't much of an alternative at this point other than carrying around my laptop for Signal messaging.

If you have a server you can set up a matrix signal bridge. https://matrix.org/docs/projects/bridge/mautrix-signal

Not what you asked, but it beats carrying the laptop around Tongue

There even seems to be a working build:

https://github.com/0mniteck/Signal-Desktop-Builder/raw/master/builds/release/signal-desktop_5.14.0_arm64.deb

Not tried it though.

That is super cool but I unfortunately don't have a server at home.

I got it installed but wasn't able to get it connected to my Axolotl account. Though I would probably blame that on Axolotl because it has been down for a few days now.

Hi, I was using axolotl too until it didn't work well anymore a few days back. I too installed the desktop app and was not able to link with axolotl. So i unregistered axolotl and registered again with the official signal app on android. I was then able to link the desktop app.

I have to say, it's much more usable than I expected, and I'm quite happy with it.

I used to have axolotl demonized to have notifications (while not in deep sleep), so I tried to have kind of the same. I created a desktop file in ~/.config/autostart with execution line as `signal-desktop -start-in-tray`, to start  "in the background" (we don't see the tray).
It's way more resource hungry than axolotl was for me, but it hasn't caused me any issue until now, it's worth it in my case (takes nearly 300mb of ram more cpu power than axolotl).

I just tested the latest release. https://git.omniteck.com/
version 5.15

It works, sluggish like everything else on the pinephone, but at least its working.

Calls over signal have about a 1.5 second delay, but text and pictures are working and thats mainly what I need it for.

How did you sync it? I tried syncing with my Axolotl and that didn't work for some reason so I have it built on my system but it doesn't run.

The latest 5.17 installs and starts up, but never gets past the initial loading icon (I'm running mobian bookworm). I can't find older .deb packages and I'm not skilled with building from scratch. Would you happen to have the old .deb?
