I have. i3's very customizable but I didn't really want to go through the learning curve to get the keys mapped to apps/windows. There is no desktop per se. The videos linked in another thread are very good.
At the base level, it should have asked you to assign a command key, Windows or Ctrl (I think). Once up, that key and Enter brings up the terminal. I'm guessing you already knew that so my apologies if too elementary.
I don't recall having other problems but I didn't spend too much time on it.
