Since that time I've also converted it to the f2fs file system, I don't see any improvement over ext4 in benchmarks or otherwise but it's been quite stable and resilient to corruption so I'm not rushing to change back. I keep the boot partition in the emmc, like you propose in the OP.
Loosing a couple of hours seems like a shame. One of the things I love about this laptop is its long battery life.
Is there any risk of wearing out the built in eMMC drive? I just had an SSD failure on my work Lenovo T470. Having only /boot on the eMMC means that it's never going to wear out I guess.
