NVMe SSD and battery life?

It depends on how much power the SSD is using. There are ways to limit the power using the nvme command. I think in my case it's about a couple hours of use time.

Since that time I've also converted it to the f2fs file system, I don't see any improvement over ext4 in benchmarks or otherwise but it's been quite stable and resilient to corruption so I'm not rushing to change back. I keep the boot partition in the emmc, like you propose in the OP.
