Lukasz actually talked me into doing a desktop image at some point in the future 
but there's some stuff in the works we have to complete before that. There will be another update to the Debian image coming soon with a few updates, including the ability to update it without reimagining from then on.
For now, you can install a desktop package that uses gbm (sounds like mate runs well) and the kernel will do all the high def media stuff you need
