from my experience using gparted on other sbc that are running of a live gparted flash drive it is possible to partition the sd card first and then using the same flash drive during the same session install a o/s on the freshly created primary partition and the newly installed o/s will only work within that prior created partition when it comes time to expand the filesystem. this is similar to the method western digital used to be able to populate the pidrive hard disk system with multiple o/s on one hard disk.
